SWADDLING POLL: When did you stop? why? Any tips/tricks?

Hi there ladies. Just hopping over here today to get some help from you that have LOs that are older than my DD, hope you don't mind: As luck would have it when we were at the dr. a few days ago I forgot to ask about swaddling and how much longer we could do it. I'm super nervous NOT to do it anymore but I guess it's just one of those things that has to happen some time...  How about you?

How old is your LO?

Do you still swaddle your LO?

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they?

Why did you stop swaddling?

Any tips/tricks that worked for you?

Anything else?

THANKS!!!

Re: SWADDLING POLL: When did you stop? why? Any tips/tricks?

  • We stopped at 5 months.  I just decided that we would give it a try one weekend and if it didn't work, we wait another week.

We went cold turkey and DS STTN that night.  I never looked back.  Shortly after that he started flipping to his tummy for sleeping.

I fully believed that if he were not ready to sleep unswaddled, he would have let us know.

  • Kaitlyn started struggling in it and I took her out of it.  She never fussed about being free since she always liked sleeping with her hands above her head.  I would say she was about 3 months old when we stopped swaddling.
  • I no longer swaddle DS, he is 7.5 months... I stopped swaddling when DS was around 3.5-4 months old.  He started to try to break the swaddle when I did it and wasn't sleeping well when swaddled anymore.  I took the swaddle off and he slept better!  I wouldn't worry about de-swaddling yet if your LO still needs it.
  • Probably stopped around 5 months....

We always started the night swaddling her....then if she broke out I wouldn't put her back into it unless she got very upset...sometimes it helped her to calm down....

it was gradual though and then one day I realized she feel asleep without it....

How old is your LO? 6months 3weeks old

Do you still swaddle your LO? only at naptime

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? We stopped swaddling overnight at about 5 months or so.

Why did you stop swaddling? We stopped at night once he started rolling over, and once he started breaking out of it.  We he started fighting one arm, we left one arm out.  When he started fighting the second arm, we left both arms out.  When started rolling around and getting it twisted around him, we switched to the sleep sack.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you?  See above.

Anything else?  We were swaddle free for almost a month, and then started swaddling again for naps (full swaddle or arms out, depending on his cooperation) otherwise he would not sleep for more than 30min.  Now he'll nap for 1-2 hours swaddled.  We don't swaddle at night though, because he moves around too much.  He almost never moves around for naps.  If your LO still likes being swaddled and does not roll around in it, I say do it as long as you want.

  • How old is your LO? Almost 6 months

Do you still swaddle your LO? No

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? 5 months, 1 week stopped cold trukey (also stopped paci the same night).

Why did you stop swaddling?  Because she was waking up 6 times a night from breaking out of it and we were re-swaddling her.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you?  We waited until we were comfortable CIO.  She did CIO for the first few nights and now she sleeps 12 hours without waking.

    Anything else?

  • We swaddled until 6.5 months... she was getting too strong for it, plus starting to almost roll onto her belly in it, which wasn't safe. We sleep trained her (Ferber) at that time, and decided to take out the swaddle at the same time. I think it made sleep training slightly harder, but i'm so glad we did it.

I would not worry about it at your LO's age. If she likes to be swaddled, keep doing it. She's still super tiny :) I know people who swaddled their babies until 10 months!

How old is your LO? Eight months

Do you still swaddle your LO? LOL no, it would be disasterous if I tried

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? Yes, we swaddled her from the time she was teeny up to about four months.

Why did you stop swaddling? Well, the first thing that made me want to stop was that I found out that her daycare (which she started at 4.5 months) would NOT swaddle. So I wanted to get her used to taking naps without it. Also, she had started waking up in the middle of the night, which she had not done previously, and every time she had struggled and gotten her hands out of the swaddle (we used a swaddleme) and had them up by her face. I suspected she was trying to suck her thumb.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? Not really. I had been stressing out about the whole deswaddle thing, and she fell asleep in my arms one night. I asked DH if he thought I should just try putting her down sans swaddle, and he said, "Yeah, if you want her to wake up in six minutes." She STTN! She really did want to have those hands out so she could find her thumb. Shortly after that, she stopped taking the paci altogether and now she's a big fan of the thumb.

Anything else? I just hope it's as easy for you as it was for us. I was REALLY worried about it but in hindsight, she kind of gave us signs that she was ready. She moves and grooves around her crib all night now; she would HATE being swaddled at this point. She starts the night flat on her back and ends it on her belly with her thumb in her mouth and her little bootie up in the air angled off to one side.

    Good luck!

    THANKS!!!

  • How old is your LO? 6.5 months

Do you still swaddle your LO? No, thank God!

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? We stopped at 5 months, one week.

Why did you stop swaddling? She grew out of it and no longer needed it be swaddled.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? Your LO will let you know when they are ready. We also quit swaddling her legs at 4 months.

Anything else? Don't be in a hurry, there is nothing wrong with swaddling. Some babies need it longer than others.

How old is your LO? 7 months tomorrow

Do you still swaddle your LO? No

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? 4.5 months,

Why did you stop swaddling? She started breaking out of the swaddle and would cry and thrash around when we swaddled her at night.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? We would start the night unswaddled. If she repeatedly startled herself awake we would swaddle her for the rest of the night. She was usually only half awake, so the swaddling wouldn't bother her at that point. One night she rolled over while she was swaddled and it scared her. She cried and cried, so that was the last time we swaddled her. Because she could roll over at that point and lift her head, I decided to let her have a very light knit blanket in the crib. I lay her down with the blanket touching her cheek and it helps her fall asleep. If she wakes up, she has the blanket to help her soothe herself back to sleep. Really, she started sleeping a lot better after she could roll into a position that she finds comfortable. I think your baby will let you know when he/she is ready to sleep without the swaddle. Good luck.

  • We stopped at 4 months as she was constantly breaking out of the swaddle and we were moving her to her crib shortly thereafter and I didn't want to have too many changes at once.

How old is your LO?  6 months

Do you still swaddle your LO?  Yes, the escape proof swaddle

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they?  I have been working on it for about a month.  The last 2 weeks have been going well.

Why did you stop swaddling?  He kept breaking out and we don't have AC so it is to hot.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you?  No, sorry it sucked!

Anything else?  Since we stopped swaddling he has been rolling, rotating on his tummy, and almost crawling.  I think being free in the night has made a huge difference in helping him learn new tricks.  Good luck!

    THANKS!!!

  • We are still swaddling at 6.5 months.  We were using the escape proof swaddle under a swaddle me but the weather finally warmed up and the other night I put him in his woombie with just a diaper.

Sleep has been hard to come by for months and it is only the last week that he has been sleeping 4 hour stretches more nights than not.  He did those first longer stretches last week when I added the extra blanket under the swaddle me.

I am hoping that we can move away from it by the end of the summer.

  • How old is your LO?  6 months 1 weekDo you still swaddle your LO? Unfortunately, yes.  The escape proof under a regular swaddle. We stil swaddle because he needs it.  I've tried without, one arm out, the woombie, etc.  Without, he kicks and works himself up into a frenzy.  I put him down awake, no rocking or anything, so the swaddle works as a routine.  He knows it's time to sleep when I swaddle him.   One arm out was a success when he woke up to eat once and I fed him and put him down super sleepy.  the woombie was a fail because he fought it trying to suck his thumb the whole time.  Any tips/tricks that worked for you?  My LO was a little bit preemie, so I'm assuming that when he's ready to quit being swaddled, he'll let me know.  I try every once in awhile, but it doesn't work.  He sleeps from 8-5, eats, and then goes back to sleep until 9 or so.
