Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Feeding carrots at 6 months?

We just started feeding solids in the past few weeks. I'm making our baby food and usually look at the website Wholesome Babyfoods to get ideas. I bought carrots yesterday to make and then read on the site that they recommend waiting until 7 months for carrots due to nitrates. On another page, it says the chance of nitrates causing a problem from carrots is 0.

Have you fed your little one carrots or did you at 6 months or before? Has anyone had any talk with their pedi about this?

I'm leaning towards making and feeding the carrots but just wondered what you all have done.

Re: Feeding carrots at 6 months?

  • We've fed carrots, but the baby jar version. I read that it's better to use jarred since the companies screen for nitrites. I don't know when you can make your own though.

  • We started solids at 4 months and Pedi approved carrots as one of his first foods at 4 months, so I think you're fine at 6.
  • We fed Max carrots as one of his first foods at around 5 months.  I made them myself and just took care to not use the same water that I used to steam them when thinning them out.  Our Pedi said that was fine!
  • We only give her jarred carrots because the baby food companies use carrots that are free of nitrates. Our pediatrician told us to not make carrot pur?e at home.

  • I had no idea of any of this...We made our own carrots and fed them to Mina around 5 months.
  • This is the article if anyone is interested.

    We do buy organic veggies.
