Trouble TTC

Stats on pregnancy after HSG?

I have an HSG on Monday that I'm a little nervous about.  Does anyone know the success rates of getting KU after one of these procedures?  Is it painful?

Re: Stats on pregnancy after HSG?

  • An HSG isn't intended to specifically improve your chances of getting pregnant. It's a diagnostic test used to determine if your tubes are open. If your tubes are closed sometimes (not always) the test can help open them back up but I don't think the test is done specifically for that side effect. You wouldn't do an HSG on it's own as a fertility aid- it's most often combined with other diagnostic tests so that your RE can determine an appropriate treatment.

It can be painful, I won't lie. Mine was pretty miserable. That said- the pain passed very quickly after the test was over. There's no healing involved- it's more like stretching a limb farther than your muscles want to stretch for 20-30 seconds, and then letting it go back to a resting position afterward. Hurts in the moment, aches a little bit after, but it's only a memory within a couple of hours. I wouldn't fear it half as much as I did initially having done it once.

  • Mine didn't really hurt -- a little pressure/discomfort in my abdomen, but getting a colonic was worse. I didn't want to have "relations" afterward though.
  •  If you do research online on the increase of fertility after an HSG, they say your chaces are slightly increased. But, what increases your chances is the oil base in the solution that they mix the dye with. Well, most places don't use oil base anymore, it's now saline based.

The way that your chances could be improved is if you have tubal blockage. The HSG could improve that blockage.

I had one a couple of months ago. I wouldn't say it hurts, but it's uncomfortable.  I started cramping pretty bad during the procedure, but it's over fast.  As soon as they're done, the bad cramps stop, and you might have mild cramps from time to time the rest of the day.

My Dr. said that there is an increased chance of pregnancy after, but ditto to the above- that's not reason alone to do the test.

  • I didn't find that the actual procedure was painful, just uncomfortable like a pap. I found the real cramping lasted after it was done and about lasted about an hour.

Good luck! They do say that your chances of conception are slightly higher following your HSG for about three months.

  • My doctor said it increased chances, but didn't quote a stat.  It didn't work for me.  :)  Mine wasn't painful.  I felt one little pain that made me jump but it was fine.  I took 800 mg of ibuprofen an hour before and drove myself home.  Good luck on Monday!

  • My RE said there was no evidence that it actually helped but is willing to have me do one asap because my mom and aunt got pregnant both times (each of them) the cycle after the HSG in the 80s.  Also, I heard the pain depends on a lot of factor including what dye is used.  Good luck!

I have heard that your chances of pregnancy are higher for 3 months following an HSG, but I don't what the actual percentages are.

This is what my RE but she didn't give any specific data.  The HSG didn't hurt for me but everyone is different.

  • Just had one today! Was trying to remain cool as a cucumber for the procedure. My friend (who did get pregnant 3 months after her HSG) said that she just felt a little discomfort. It is different for everyone. I had some painful cramping which was very similar to- and not any worse than- typical period cramping. I was cramping after they inserted the tube and I'm still have dull cramping 12 hours later. Haven't taken ibuprofen yet but that could have helped. I also felt a slightly woozy for a minute or two afterwards but no biggie.

I feel like I may have had a strange side effect. I felt incredibly irritable for most of the day after.... I do have depression issues but it felt more like when I feel bitchy because of hormones during my cycle. I'm curious if the dye chemically depressed me or maybe the discomfort of the whole thing just took over me? Did anyone else experience a bout of irritability after?

Best of luck with your HSG imoverit! It should be fine. Hoping this will do it for both of us.

  • Thanks Griff for your input and I'm so hoping it's it for both of us this cycle and of course all the other girls on this site with all they've tried too.  Anyway, with the irritability thing maybe ask your doctor at the follow up appt.  I'll ask mine too.  GL!

  • I had an HSG test on Monday. My nurse told me prior to the procedure that it would be similiar to a pap smear and some menstrual cramps.... Well to make a long story short, it was so painful that I had a full blown vasovagal episode and didnt get to finish the procedure. Nothing like a pap or "mild" cramping. I was sore for an entire day and had spotting for a few days after.
  • It is so crazy how some women have 0 to little pain and others have horrible pain.  I have heard the pain level is directly related to the skill level of the physician (who knows if that is true).  I was so nervous having mine done, i also took the Ibuprofen before hand.  I could hear the woman in the next room having hers done and she was begging him to stop which freaked me out even more.  Anyway, it was pretty awful pain.  I just bit my lip and kept telling myself to just breathe.  I knew I needed this done to rule that out and I didnt want it to take any longer than needed so I didnt squirm or wiggle.  It was 2 minutes of terrible pain, but after it was just sore like PP said.  I will admit I was so worked up that as soon as I saw my husband ( i asked him to take me since I was nervous) I started crying.  It was just intense AF cramps after that, I took a hot bath which made them pretty much go away.
The doctor performing mine told me when he was a resident his wife needed one done.  He siad they allowed him to be in the room and she screamed, cussed, called names, and pretty much embarrassed him to no end lol.  Made me feel a little better that I wasnt crazy.
Good Luck to you, I hope yours is much better than mine!  This is my 3rd month so FX that it will help me this month.
    Ba hahahaha!

Unfortunately, I've had HSG and personally know 5 women who have done it too and haven't conceived right away. Only 1 conceived but that was 1 yr later with IVF, the rest of us haven't been so lucky. I don't think HSG boosts chances.
I didn't take any pain meds before it, didn't hurt, just had slight cramps that evening.
