Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Help me with solids...

So, at H's 4 month well check, doc said she could get started on solids.  We waited until 5 months to try and, at first, she was confused but kinda excited.  Then, nothing!  Since then, she sometimes will eat her oatmeal, sometimes not at all (and gets really upset about it).  About two weeks ago I tried bananas, sweet potatoes and avocado.  All a bust.  By the way, I am making my own foods (other than the oatmeal).

What's the deal?  She acts VERY interested in our food but gets so upset with what I make her.  We are going to visit my family next week so I may just stop until we get back (maybe keep up the oatmeal but nothing new).

Any tips, ideas, thoughts?

  • It could be she's just not ready yet.  I'd say wait until you get back from the family and try again.  Or, just out of curiousity I would try giving her jar food (I like to test different methods out to see what is the best when something fails).

Ri HATED rice cereal.  I waited a week and tried sweet pots and she loved it.  Now I can get her to eat just about everything except prunes.  I even gave her rice cereal last week because I was out of oatmeal and she gobbled it right up.

You could also try giving it to LO on your finger instead of the spoon.  She just may need to get used to the spoon.

  • Great ideas!  I did try green beans out of a jar and didn't work either.  You might be right.  She just may not be ready.  I need to stop comparing her to other babies her age.  I hate when I do that.  I will do what you suggested and wait until we get back.  See what happens then...

  • My SIL always compares her LO to Ri because they were born 4 days apart.  Ri is about a month ahead of my niece.  But I think a lot of it has to do with her LO was born at 37 weeks.  She always seems worried because it seems her LO is behind Ri, but really she's right on track for just about everything.  It's actually the reason I stopped worrying so much about where Ri is compared to other babies.

  • Yeah.  My niece is 11 months and, for some reason, I seem to try and compare H to her!  I mean, that's ridiculous!  I find myself straining my brain to remember what she was doing when she was H's age.  I don't know why I am so obsessed.  I don't let anyone else know!  Ha!

  • Sounds like us....we started at 5.5 months with rice cereal for a week. DS hated it.  We waited a week and then went to oatmeal - this went alot better.  Then we went to sweet potatoes and havent looked back ...we are now on 2 meals a day.  Just give your LO some time.
