Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Please help me figure this out...

When Lucie was just 2 months old, she was spitting up quite a bit.  Our Ped told us to try putting a teaspoon of rice cereal in her bottle and it would help her hold the milk down.  She got very fussy with it in the evening, screaming, stretching out, not being able to fall asleep - seeming what colic must be like, and we quit that after just a couple times.  The spitting up stopped, so it didn't seem to be acid reflux related.

Fast forward to 4 months, we tried her on rice cereal, mixed w/ formula and no matter what the consistency, she had the exact same reaction as last time when it was in the bottle.  Ped told us to try oatmeal.  Same deal.

Fast forward again to now.  She still has not been able to eat cereal (same reaction), and any foods that have some form of flour or wheat (from what I notice) baby food mac and cheese, risotto, cereal...all the same reaction still.

Any idea whats going on?  She has no other reaction to any other foods, I tried gas drops, and they don't help.  Our Ped is adamant that it is not a gluten allergy, but thats what I think it is...I'm just so frustrated and upset for her, and I can't give her straight fruits and veggies forever.

  • Maybe it's the texture and nasty taste of it. Tastes like paste. I've tried cereal a few times and DS hates it! Even with pureed peaches. I haven't tried oatmeal yet though.

  • I would have her tested for siliac (gluten allergy) My nephew and my whole BIL's side has it. They can't have any wheat in their diet or else they have stomach problems.

She actually takes the food just fine, she ate the cereal no problem, and the foods with the rice/pasta in them she eats great too.  Its just nighttime that it seems to effect her...

Oh I'm sorry. I must have misread your post. Then I agree with the PP. If you have a whole foods or wegmans near you, they have TONS of gluten free foods.
  • My LO hated rice cereal by itself and when we mixed it with her baby food she would become fussy and seem to be in pain just like you described so we have not been giving it to her for about four days. We are only on 1st foods so she hasn't eated any of the other foods you wrote about. Maybe get a second opinion? Sorry, I'm not much help, just wanted to empathize!

  • DS was doing this too with cereal.  Turns out it's processed with soy and he has a soy allergy.  Could your LO have a soy allergy?
