anyone have the first years safety gate lock get stuck?

if so could you fix it?

I got this secondhand from someone in my MoM group & it was working fine for about 2 weeks (and several years for her) but the lock stuck tonight & we can't get it open. Let's just say I'm very glad we have 2 sets of stairs right now but this is at the bottom of the set that we use most often, right off the kitchen & goes right to the kids' room/playroom. UGH.

I read reviews on amazon that apparently this is a frequent occurrence & not fixable, I have no idea how we'll remove it from the wall now (and yay, we will have lots of nice holes in the wall to fill, as I will replace it with a pressure gate I think)....

Desperately hoping someone has a solution?
