SAHM's are you going back to work

Are you going back to work when the kids go to school?  Preschool or kindergarten, elementary, etc.?

Re: SAHM's are you going back to work

  • The plan is for me to SAH until DD or the futurechild is in 1st grade. However, if my DH got a promotion, I doubt I'd work again. His schedule is not conducive to two parents working.

  • I put SS because I have no idea.  It wouldn't surprise me if I get a bit antsy to do something once the kids are in school all day, but then I do want to be around when they're out of school in the afternoon and available to be involved with their school and other activities, so I don't know that I'll ever go back to a full time, corporate job like I've always had.  I like the idea of starting my own business, but I have no idea what kind.  With my background and experience, I could probably get some consulting work pretty easily, so that might be my happy medium someday.

  • I really don't know.  I think we always assumed I would, but now that I think more about it, I don't want to put DS in any type of daycare or full day camps for the summers when school is out, so no sure how that would work out.  I am a CPA, although I haven't practiced since DS was born.  I always did corporate work, but lately I've been wondering if seasonal income tax work would be a good option for me when DS is in 1st grade and beyond.  The season is apx Jan through April, so it would leave the summers open while still providing a little extra income and work in my field.
  • When we decided to have kids, it was always the plan that I be a SAHM and that I will be home for the duration-- ie, when they go to college.

  • DH says I have to but I am hoping to go part time.  I am an elementary school teacher.  I will be home at least until my youngest is in K, so 3 more years minimum.

  • I am SS because I have no idea. In theory, I would like to do some part time work eventually, but finding true part time (that allows me to be home when DS gets out of school) in what I want to do is unlikely. Plus, the thought of spending my time volunteering/helping at DS's school, etc. is fairly appealing to me.

DH is also toying with early retirment. If he does that and can be home for DS then I will definitely go back to work for a bit - I enjoyed my job quite a bit.

  • I recently switched to WAHM from SAHM.  DD goes to school 3 days a week.  One day we also have a sitter.  It wasn't my choice, but w/ my DH's business (contractor) it was a neccessity.
  • I voted that I'll be going back to work after kids are in elementary...but not in the traditional sense, most likely.  I hope to go back part time, and go back to school for business or accounting. About the same time (4 yrs) we hope for DH to start his own company and I'll eventually be managing that rather than working for someone.  We're just in a "holding pattern" career-wise until the kids are all in school.
  • I'm a writer and editor and I was doing freelance work after DD was born but my contract ended before DS was born. I don't see ever going back to work full-time but I'd like to get some freelance work going again when the kids are older. I also write fiction (well, I did before kids) and would like to get back to that at some point in the not-too-distant future.

  • I voted for special snowflake b/c I just don't know yet.  At some point I imagine I will go back to work b/c what the hell else am I going to do with the rest of my life?!  But I have no idea when it will be.  Maybe when he/they are in middle school?  Or maybe I'll do something part time when he/they are in elementary?

IDK.  Mostly b/c I don't know what I want to do--I'm not going back to teaching.

  • I know I will, probably after the girls are in 1st grade.  But, I don't know what I'll do!
  • I want to go back to school so that I can work at a later date if and when I decide to.  There are days NOW that I wish I had a job to go to....but MH's schedule is SO crazy that it makes no sense for me to go the daycare route only to bring home enough money to cover daycare AND miss out on spending time with the kids and MH when he's off.  Ideally I'll further my education in the medical field and work PRN or make my own schedule.  I have a strong urge to learn more and get out and experience more, so I know I'll end up working again some day....just not with little ones running around needing Mommy all the time!
