When to introduce sippy?

When do you introduce a sippy cup and what do you put in it?  I EBF, so do I put breastmilk in it?  Water?  Juice cut with water?  Any sippy cup recommendations?

  • Sorry, also, HOW do you introduce it?

  • I started Joanna on it about 2 months ago. At first she just kind of chewed it but the more I gave it to her the better she got it. Get the ones with the handles and soft spout to start off with. I usually put about 2oz of juice and water it down.
  • Just got one today.

  • I have been giving Leighton one for about 3 weeks, but all she does is chew on it right now!
  • We give DD a sippy cup every night with dinner.  She only chews on it but I want her to get used to holding it etc.  We put water in it because I won't start on juice until closer to 2 (at which point I will do 1 part juice, 3 parts water).
  • We started a sippy cup at 7 months. We just use the cheap Parent's Choice brand cups from Wal-Mart. I like them because of their handles and they're cheap and I don't worry about them getting lost. We started introducing a mix of water and apple juice (1 ounce juice to 1 ounce water per our pedi). Also on super hot days when we've been outside I'll give him cold water in the sippy. At first I put the cup in his hands with the sippy part in his mouth to give him the idea which he caught on to pretty quick. There has been a lot of spilling and just whanging the cup around though, more so than drinking from it sometimes.
  • We introduced at 5.5 months and with formula, then just water.  We are introducing juice until 2 yrs of age.
