Cleaning LO's ears?

Yay, work un blocked the bump!

Ok, onto the question... how do you clean LO's ears out? He has sooo much wax and my sister commented on it but I've always been scared to stick a Q tip in his lil ear. Probably a dumb question but I need to get it done (I feel like such a bad mommy for not doing it sooner!), so any suggestions?

Re: Cleaning LO's ears?

  • There are "baby q-tips" that are out, that don't really allow the tip to go in very far to the ear canal... those drive me crazy, though. After having dealt with her double-ear infection, I'm now quite comfortable taking a regular q-tip to her ear. Just have to be extra careful to not penetrate very far into the ear canal, and be extremely gentle with it.

  • J&J makes baby q-tips.  They are narrow at the tip but then get fatter so you can't insert it too far into LO's ears.
  • I use a thin wash cloth to clean his ears.  I've only used the baby q-tips a few times, but they def work.
  • I dont' like the baby q-tips - I just use regular ones (after each bath) and am sure to be gentle.
  • We use those baby q-tips. They work great for us. I just clean the Scapha, Fossa and Concha, and then gently swab the back of the Tragus. That usually cleans out any visible wax.

  • My pediatrcian suggests a warm thin wash cloth when she's in the tub....works for me....I don't like sticking a q-tip in her ears either!!! If they get really bad you can ask your pediatrician to clean them at the office on his next visit....they have this little tool they use and she said its completely normal for you to miss some.
  • I asked the Pedi at his last appt. and she said his ears were fine, he didn't have any wax. I was REALLY surprised.

  • I use the baby q-tips.  They work fine.  But if you think there's a lot of wax deep down the ear canal, you can mix equal parts peroxide and water and use an eye dropper to put some in the canal.  The peroxide loosens/liquefies the wax and cleans them good.  My pedi told me that.
