Pretty Pushers?

Gowns that you wear in the hospital, then throw away... interesting...

We along with many other mothers agree that it is more
hygienic to wear your own cotton dress during labor than
to wear one used by hundreds before you, such as those
in most hospitals. In this case, 'disposable' is good,
because it conserves some of the millions of gallons
of water and chemicals currently expended  daily on
laundry in hospitals and birthing centers across America.

Re: Pretty Pushers?

  • They're cute but doesn't seem very practical to me. If I am on labor and in pain, probably the last thing I would be concerned about is looking pretty lol. I'll just change and look pretty after I deliver..you know, for photo ops ;-).

what the?!  Giving this the side eye.  Say you think it's more hygienic (and cute?) to wear this product and what not, but to say it's more environmentally friendly to throw something out boggles my mind.

The energy expended to clean the 1-2 gowns you use during labor is the SAME water and chemicals are used to wash everything else you touch during your stay (sheets, blankets, baby blankets, shirts, towels, (towels to clean off the equipment) etc.)  Perhaps we should just bring disposable everything with us for every hospital stay.

I hear you.  When I read that it definitely made me raise an eyebrow.  I think taking the enviro approach is very similar to all of the other "green washing" on cosmetics & beauty products.  They are cute, but I agree with the maybe not so eco-friendly approach!

yeah it sounds like they are trying to jump on the "green" bandwagon but their logic doesn't make sense to me.

i had pondered getting something nice to wear but honestly when it was game time it was the LAST thing on my mind.  sure, right after she was born and we took our "first" pictures i was thinking "i'm going to look like crap in these pictures" but i really didn't care.  the majority of women do not look that 'put together' for their L&D pics and it's ok i think! :)

This was me, too. I briefly considered taking my own clothes to labor in, but it really didn't matter that much to me and I can honestly say I didn't think of it once during the entire 22 hours! Plus I spent a fair amount of time with the gown hiked up to my waist anyway lol.

  • Yeah, I thought about getting my own delivery gown too. But in the end, I didn't want to spend the money, had way too many other things on my mind and ... well  ... no one I know has bought their own, so I felt like it'd be a little weird?

I mean, DH would have laughed at me. My doctor would have thought it was odd. It'd be like wearing a prom dress to McDonalds when shorts and a tee would do, ya know?

In the end, I probably wore 3-4 different gowns. Are you going to buy 3-4 disposable gowns? What a waste of money and resources. I wore one the night before the induction. After my morning shower, I wore another. Then, when I had the c-section, everything came off. So after the c-section, I got a clean gown (#3) to wear. I was still on the epidoural until the next day, so I got a 4th gown to wear the next day.

    Just sayin'

  • I labored in Russ' t-shirt because that's what I arrived at the hospital in.  Like the other girls I didn't care what I was wearing.
  • I wore my own clothes during labor and delivery...a cotton tank-style bra that hooked up the front and a long, cotton sarong.  By the time things down down to business, the sarong was LONG gone. Seriously.  Modesty goes out the window.  That said, it wasn't ruined at all...it was washed and packed away with my maternity clothes for my next baby.

LOL amen to that! At one point I had two doctors and three nurses all staring at (and touching) my nether regions to make sure I was pushing effectively since Will wasn't coming out. I'm normally a fairly modest and private person, but in that minute I just did.not.care.
