Babies: 6 - 9 Months

surprised by LOs 6 month stats, anyone else?

My child is big.  He was born at 10.5 lbs, never wore "newborn" clothes (not even home from the hospital -- didn't fit), was out of 0-3 by 6 weeks, and at 6 mos is in some 18 month clothes (onesies and rompers) but mostly 12 month.  He's busting out of his infant seat (snugride32) and is almost ready for the 3rd setting on the exersaucer.

I feel like he's so much bigger than he was at 4 months, when he was 27.5" long and just shy of 17 lbs.  Yesterday he had his 6 month appt. and I was shocked to find that he's only 18.2 lbs and 28.5 inches. I've been pretty much dead on every time I've guessed his stats before appts, but this time I was guessing 20lbs and 30".  He just seems so much bigger than his stats.

Anyone else totally shocked by their child's stats?  Either they were much bigger or smaller than you predicted?  Just curious.

  • Yup...I thought LO was 18lbs 29inches...he was 19lbs 7oz 27inches.

  • He could be leveling off.  My toddler was HUGE for his gestational age (35 weeks) until he hit 6 months.  At that time, he fell into the 75th percentile and by 9 months, he was in the 50s.  He's held steady in the 50s ever since.  I predicted correctly on my 7 month old's weight, but his height was about 2 inches shorter than I thought.
  • Yep, I was thinking 17-18 pounds and 27 inches for his 6 month and he was 19.5 pounds and 28 inches.  I think he is starting to level off now with the weight gain though since he is getting to be more active.
  • I don't think your kid is that big. Mine isn't six months yet and he is 17lbs. He isn't that big, he is in like the 40th %. Mine is also almost to the 3rd level of the exersaucer as well. Not that big.

I can't believe how teeny my little guy is.  He is 16lbs, 4oz, which puts him at the 28th percentile.  It's really not that little, but since DH and I were pretty good sized babies and my sister's kids are all chunk-a-roos, I was totally convinced DS would be a big one too.  My niece, who's 2 months younger than DS, weighs more than him already!

  • ::look at my siggy::I have a big one..she is finally starting to level off SOME..but still growing like crazy!
  • Yes!  DD's 6 month check-up was closer to 7 months and she had jumped from 12.5 pounds at 4 months to 17.5 pounds at 7 months.  I was definitely surprised.  She hit a massive growth spurt and it seemed like it was overnight.
