Let me preface this by saying I know it's not the worst thing in the world and there are plenty of things out there. I know this but I am disgusted. About 2 months ago we discovered a live mouse and a dead mouse in our garage. We got the live one out and removed the dead one. This week I discovered some droppings in the basement and then yesterday in our pantry closet. I wanted to vomit I was so disgusted by this. I am super clean (and I know this is not an indication of them) and we live in a rural area where we have lots of animals around. I have an exterminator coming this morning but I am just so grossed out.
Now this is the part I don't get. We have a cat. Wtf isn't she catching them? I saw her staring at the stove last night and I thought to myself I bet they are under there. sure enough MH pulled out pans (ugh) and there were droppings in there. So why didn't she go after them?
Has anyone else experienced this? I am so afraid they are going to stay even after they come out today. Is there anything I should ask the exterminator?
Thanks for listening.
Re: I am so upset
I can only imagine how horrified you are right now.
The garage would upset me, but the pantry discovery would send me over the edge. Your cat must not have that killer instinct! On the bright side, at least she is letting you know where they are? Sorry, that isn't much of a bright side, is it?
Living in a rural area, I'm not sure what you can do, but its definitely worth asking.
I'm sorry!
Jodi - you have no idea how sick I feel right now. this how yesterday started and then today more discovery. I guess that's true about the cat but we have about 4,000 sq feet - they could freaking be anywhere.
I talked to my neighbors and they have all had them in their shed but not the house. Clearly they are getting in somehow.
I am just feeling so disgusted : (
I think the company should have some ideas on where they could be getting in at.
I really don't know what I would do. At our old house, we had a moth problem that started with some dog food and that really bothered me. I threw so much food out and even now in this house, everything is double sealed because I don't want to deal with it ever again.
I live in the boonies & mice is just a fact of life for us. Yes I'm grossed out but I've lived with it all my life so I'm used to it. Every fall I set out poison & traps which seems to help alot. We also do it early spring too.
You will be amazed at how mice can find their way inside a house even if you think your house is totally "sealed". They can find the tiniest hole or crack & squeeze thru.
I have a cat who LOVES to hunt but only outside...god forbid he gets off his lazy ass to take on a mouse inside. Very frustrating I tell you.
Keep a close watch & make a note of where you are finding droppings & let the exterminator know. Ask the exterminator if he can check out your foundation inside the house & outside to see if there are any holes or cracks.
I threw out everything open in the closet!!! it was awful.
I hope so girls as I am just so disturbed by this.
I hope your being a little dramatic for effect. Mice really are not a big deal. Super clean has little to do with it. Most indoor, well fed cats are not going to waste their time with a mouse.
I have never had them in any house before, until 2 months ago, one jumped out of our trash can. DH caught that one in tupperware and took it away. I just noticed evidence of a new one, so I put out poison. They like chocolate. We live in the city, but next to a forest, so I am sure that has something to do with it. We also have an old house, at least in part (1/2 is old, 1/2 is new).
I'm also confused if you're writing is tongue in cheek or if you're really this horrified by a mouse?! I totally hate mice but your tone is odd. maybe it's just how it's coming across online...
We're dealing with the same problem right now. I think it was only one mouse and we've caught it but I have another trap out just in case. Ours was also under the stove. I found dropping in pans I keep under there. Gross
I'm not a big fan of mice, but they are a fact of life in the country. I don't think most indoor cats really care about mice. A barn cat? Maybe. Probably not a pet cat, though.
When the exterminators come, they should be able to show you places where the mice might be getting in. We had a couple when we first moved into our house. We found the spots they were coming in and cauked them up tight. We haven't had one since.

We had a mouse problem once. . .we, too live by open space and they were getting in through the crawlspace in the basement and making their way upstairs. . . there were also some in the garage.
We put poison in the basement (unfinished, doorknob lock, kids and pets never go down there) near their entry point. Also set traps in the basement and upstairs. . .snap traps.
It got to the point that they were getting the bait off the snap traps without triggering them so we put out glue traps (which I think are inhumane, but I just wanted the mice out).
There are also ultrasonic devices that plug in that are supposed to drive them away, but we were able to get rid of them via the traps and poison. . . haven't had any upstairs in years. . . occasionally find them in the basement (maybe 1-2 per year) at this point.
You should totally FIRE YOUR CAT. Kick that pu$$y's a$$ to the curb. I'll bet THEN She'll learn how to catch mice.
Oh, but then you'll be freaking out because there's a dead mouse on your kitchen floor. The cat should really learn how to properly dispose of them as well.
Sorry, coming from the "fact of life" gang. Those that haven't seen them--just haven't looked in the right spot yet.
We get them in the attic every winter. Since nothing is in our attic except insulation we don't do anything with them. They eventually eat the insulation and die. My DH puts mouse poison in the garage where the dog can't get it.
We had a basement window that my DH would open once in a while. We have a cat that we rescued that used to be an outside cat (we made into an inside cat...declawed). Well, she got out the open window and brought back a chipmunk. So...we had a chipmunk running out the house! My DH caught it in a humane trap and took it to the woods and set it free. There have been a couple of times she has gotten out and brought back a mouse. My DH has been able to catch them because she has "played" with them so much they are exhausted. I don't even know how she catches them in the first place since she is declawed. We used to have a cat with claws and when she was an indoor/outdoor cat she would EAT the mice and leave their tails at the back door! YUK
