Baby Names

Belgium?

Someone suggested this to honor my heritage. Just wondering your thoughts on it for a girl. I usually am NOT a fan of place names but I kind of like it the more I think about it. Do you hate it as much as I think you all will?? Should I toss it?

Re: Belgium?

  • You know what- scratch that.

When I see it written it doesn't look pretty and all I see is GUM.

    Thanks though :)

ETA- I forgot to mention it'd be for a MN only! But no matter, it's off the list.

  • Sorry, it's pretty bad. Is there a common name there, or is it all German/Dutch names? I went to school w/ a foreign exchange student named Jurian - pronounced ur - ian. He was hot, so I have a good association w/ that name. Anyways, that's the only Dutch name I know, so good luck.

  • I really shouldn't comment because I just said that I think place names are lovely and convey a sense of heritage in another post, but . . . I do think there is a difference between naming your baby Vienna or India and choosing something like Bangladesh or Yemen, or sadly enough, Belgium. Some can be names and some cannot, there has to be a certain rhythm; personally, I don't think Belgium has it (though I may be biased, since I dislike "J" sounds).
  • There are other ways to honor your heritage. :)

  • I do love place names (dd#2 is London) but I personally don't think Belgium  makes the transition from place to baby very well. Sorry.  BUT, if you like it, then use it. :)
  • I'm not really a fan of place names, but many of them do look nice written out. Belguim isn't one of them!
