Re: window of readiness?

  • I have heard the window of readiness is between 23 and 28 months. Once they get past 28 months old it becomes a power struggle with your toddler because they are starting to get how much control they actually have over the situation.

I will tell you I am babysitting my BFF's 3 year old daughter this summer and we have daily battles of the wills over potty training. The girl is very good and holding her pee, will hold it for like 5 or 6 hours even drinking 3 juice boxes and will not go. Then it is like the flood gates open and she pees all over my dining room chairs at lunch. I will have her sit on the potty about 3 times every hour and she always says she doesn't need to pee. I even read a couple of books to her on the last couple of trips before lunch to get her to stay on the potty longer to try and relax and go and she just will not do it. They frustrating thing is she gets so upset with herself when she does pee in her panties, but she refuses to sit on the potty long enough to go. Her mother and I have been working with her full time now for over 2 weeks (since she has been out of preschool for the summer, they insist on having her in pull ups at school) without any improvements. The main problem is she knows she is in control of this and just refuses to do it. We have tried bribing her with everything under the sun and she just doesn't care. She doesn't want to go to Cinderella's castle for lunch like a big girl who wears panties, she says she would rather stay home in her room wearing a diaper and eat broccoli, not candy. She is sooo strong willed.

  • In my opinion, every child is different and is going to be ready to potty train at a different time.  I have heard that kids that around other kids that are trained or are training might be ready sooner due to the peer pressure type of thing (this can be older sibs or daycare) but I don't know that I believe that totally as I have a lot of SAHM friends who kids trained sooner than mine who are in school FT>  I think just like walking and talking, kids do it when they are ready.
