4 lbs in a wk? WTH???

I've been steadily gaining 1 lb per week since 2nd tri and my weight has been in check with the recommended weight gain. I weighed myself today and I am up 4 lbs since last week. WTH?!? Did I really eat THAT much to gain 4 lbs? I still work out regularly and actually worked out 5x last week. My belly does not look any bigger (at least I think so).  Some people tell me I don't even look pregnant. Where did that weight go? Did this baby just have a growth spurt? Am I just bloated? I don't know if this is a fluke or what. Crying

Re: 4 lbs in a wk? WTH???

  • don't worry unless it becomes regular!  just like outside babies, inside babies can have growth spurts too (not 4lbs worth, but your body compensates by storing water and energy/lbs).

I just stopped weighing myself at home and decided to just check in during my MW appts. and figured I would let them voice concerns if needed b/c it could vary so much from day to day/week to week.

  • Early on in my pregnancy, I decided not to weigh myself at home.  I knew I'd drive myself crazy and it would cause me to be overly-focused on my weight fluctuations.  I monitor my weight gain via my regular OB/GYN check-ups.  I've gained 12 pounds so far (I gained 6-7 of those pounds in just the last 4 weeks).  She only wanted me to gain 20 pounds total because I was considered "overweight", but didn't express any concerns to me during my last appt on Monday.  My BP is perfect and I haven't had any other complications, so weight is not the only factor to consider.

EXACTLY! I don't mind gaining 2 lbs in a week but 4 lbs?!?!!? Not sure if my body is storing water or what. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens in the next few days. I have a doc's appointment tomorrow I'll see what the doc says.

  • I wouldn't worry yet... there are so many possible explanations.  I didn't always gain consistently.  I also gained rapidly at the end, when many women taper off.  Still, my weight was just where I wanted it when I delivered -- up 25 from pre-preg.  Just keep doing the healthy stuff you're already doing and you and baby should be fine!

  • stress could be a big factor, as could so many other things.  don't worry about it just yet.  :)
  • just drink lots and lots of water and stay hydrated... you're probably just bloated and need to flush it all out! just watch for signs of pre-eclampsia but otherwise you're probably just fine and if they are concerned about it they will tell you at your next visit

I didn't gain consistently, either.  One month I gained 11 pounds, then next next I appeared to gain nothing.  I think it's just water retention making it look like I gained more/less than I actually did.  Overall, my weight gain has been normal to slightly above normal (I'm almost at 36 weeks, and I've gained about 35 pounds now)

This! I wouldn't worry too much. I lost almost 15 in the beginning due to extreme m/s, then gained it all back in 2 weeks...and more! So much so that my dr said I could ease off on the weight gain =P Then after that episode, I gained the most around my 2nd tri, sometimes 5lbs in 2 weeks. Then at the end, I didn't gain any weight for 3 weeks and even lost a pound. Everyone's different and I never gained consistently. It was always all over the place. So as long as you're keeping healthy, it's all good =)

At 21 weeks, I have gained ~11-12 lbs so I was just shocked with the 4 lb weight gain in a week! I'll have to observe what happens in the next week or so.

Yes  All of this. Some weeks I'd gain nothing, and others my weight would suddenly shoot up. I wouldn't worry about it unless it keeps happening.

Pre-e symptoms are mostly high blood pressure and sudden swelling - it's normal for feet to swell, and for hands a bit, but if your hands and face suddenly puff up a lot, you need to go get checked out.

Thanks Lisa. I'll look out for signs. So far, no swelling or anything (knock on wood).  I had my doc's appointment this morning and my blood pressure is 108/60 so hopefully, it stays that way. I weighed myself this morning and i am down 1 lb Confused. The doc did confirm that it's normal to gain a few lbs in one week and nothing the other.

  • Oh honey, you're pregnant.  And your little baby is growing, your fluids are increasing, your placenta is growing too.  Unless you're doctor is worried about it then let it go.  You're gaining weight because you're growing a baby...it's SUPPOSED to happen.  And exercising is great but try not to think of it as preventing weight gain...

Thanks Lori. No, I am not trying to lose weight at all. I've been eating like a pig :-). I was just worried coz it was a big jump which is not normal for me. Actually, now I know why. I've been retaining water!! I peed like 100x yesterday. I think Iost a couple of lbs already lol. It's soo freakign hot here in DC so like you all said, my body is doing what it's supposed to do...stocking up on fluids :-).
