Babies: 3 - 6 Months

bleeding scalp

DD has cradle cap. It never really seems to go away. I put baby oil on her head 3x a day, but it's either coated in that nasty stuff or it's dried and cracking. Her scalp (which is bald, of course) shows all of these little blood marks. Her skin is red and flaky. Ugh. People have asked more than once about it - some out of concern, some out of disgust. I'm just going to start putting hats on her so people will stop asking about it.

Anyway, anyone know how to help it? I was told baby oil will do the trick, but now I need other options.

Re: bleeding scalp

  • DS has nasty terrible eczema patches on his head.  We give him nightly baths (only using soap every other night) and just let his skin soak in the water.  I take a baby hair brush and once his scalp as been wet for a while, I gently scrub his head with the brush.  Then after the bath I goop up his head with Aquaphor. It's been helping and he has less baby dandruff.

    Good luck, HTH

  • We got the OK to carefully wash the area with head and shoulders, and it totally worked!  It was gone within 2 or 3 washes and hasn't come back! GL
  • DS has this issue too.  He currently looks like he went toe-to-toe with a bear!  I've been putting the baby oil on at night but during the day I actually put eucerine (or similar) cream on it.  Looks terrible but it does seem to be working.  He doesn't have much hair so it helps.  I've also realized that in the middle of the night he's scratching his scalp and that's causing it so I'm vigilant about his finger nails being super short at all time!

  • Aquaphor! It is the only thing that I have going that makes any difference at all.
  • We soak it in baby oil for 10-15 mins and then we use Selsun Blue (per pedi's rec), and a brush during the bath.  No lotion.  I brush with baby brush in circular motions once/day.  Keep LO's nails super short (and he STILL scratches himself b/c he's itching it all day long!!)

It looks to be getting better, but DS is STILL scratching it all the time poor guy!

  • Have you tried using Aquaphor?  This really helped Noah with his really dry flaky skin when he was a newborn.
  • Baby oil works for us.  Our pedi told us to use the baby oil once a day, alternating days.  Something about too much will clog the glands.  Not sure if this is true or not.

I have a friend from Ireland that uses butter- good ole fashion butter, works for her.  But I have never tried it.

I heard (from pedi.)  that Head and Shoulders works as well- dime size amount let it sit for ten minutes then use a brush to make circular motions for five minutes.  Once this is done risen.  Repeat this every other day until it is gone.

Sorry her scalp is bleeding a little.  Sounds like it would make for a non-happy baby.

  • DD had bad cradle cap...not to the point of bleeding though.  Pedi said to use a tar based shampoo such as Neutrogena T-Gel and wash her head with it 2-3x/week.  Every night, she said to also apply 1% hyrdocortizone cream to DD's head.  This all worked like a charm and it was all gone within a week or so.

  • Evey doesn't have it too bad, so I haven't really done much for it.  But a friend of mine said to use Olive Oil.  Leave it on there for a few minutes, then use a comb and massage the area.  Then wash it off.
  • I've used olive oil for Iris's scalp, which has helped a ton. About 10 min or so before her bath, I put it on her scalp. Then in the bath I gently scrub with a washcloth then shampoo (maybe skip the scrubbing for a while until the cracks heal). Iris's flakes are almost gone!

She's actually just as happy as ever. It just looks bad. I'm sure if we had a cat, people would be accusing it of attacking the baby. Lol.
