Parenting after 35

Ravenous

Mikey's appetite has exploded overnight. Literally. Two days ago he was fine with how much he was eating, then yesterday he was in hysterics unless he was eating something. We're pretty sure it's a growth spurt, but it could also just be that my little baby is becoming a toddler and needs meals and snacks Crying

We've been getting better about proper meals, but he's still starving. I need to go shopping for some healthier snacks. He ate his weight in puffs yesterday and I don't want to make a habit of it.

Re: Ravenous

  • That happened with M at about the same age. And, hehehehe, we also responded initially by pumping her full of Puffs since we were caught so off guard. Her daddy still thinks that puffs will satisfy her - but then he only "feeds"(i.e. puts puff on her exersaucer) her in the morning before he goes to work.

  • So how much whole/baby foods is he eating on a normal day? 3 meals a day or more?

Today he had yoghurt and Cheerios for breakfast, toast with cream cheese and bananas for lunch and a bit of chicken, rice and veg for dinner.  He also had a handful of goldfish crackers as a snack to make a change from yesterday's puffs, but I don't want him to snack too much.

I guess what he had seems reasonable, I just didn't like him eating so many goldfish.

I just got back from the store where I got some sliced cheese, he loves feeding himself sliced cheese. Got some other stuff, but I'm basically still at a loss. Huh?

  • We are also struggling with healthy snack options.  We've had luck with cucumbers, watermelon, and carrots.  For the carrots, I cut them into sticks and nuke them for a minute or two so they are soft enough for DD to eat (and let them cool before giving them to her).
    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.

I was going to steam some carrots for him, but microwaving them seems much easier :P

And cucumbers are an awesome idea. I was in the produce section last night and everything looked like he'd either hate it or it looked like a choking hazard, so some mushy cucumber sounds perfect.

    Thanks!

Wow I think I am not giving Sienna enough whole foods. When you say yogurt & cheerios, does he eat a whole yogurt cup? How much cheerios.

We give him plain, full fat yoghurt from TJ's, and it comes in a big tub so I'm not sure exactly how much he gets. We give him two or three heaped tablespoons, depending on how  hungry he seems, and a handful of cheerios.

So, I'd say 3 ounces of yoghurt and about the same amount of Cheerios.

And, like I said, M lets us know he's hungry. Sienna may be happy with the amount of whole foods you're giving her.
