2nd Trimester

How many diapers?

Does anyone have a list of how many diapers I'll need of each size of diaper? I know i cant get an exact amount since babies grow at different rates and go through different numbers of diapers.

Ex:

Newborn: 800-1,000

Size 2: 1,000-1,600

Re: How many diapers?

  • The first several months they go through about 10 diapers a day, so I am basing my numbers on that.

Don't get very many of the newborn ones because they grow out of those pretty quick.  Size 2 and 3 are the ones I am stocking up with now. Right now I have about 400 size 2 and that is probably all I will buy for now.  I will probably get the same number of size 3.  I have to have a good supply, but not trying to completely stock up now either.

  • There is absolutely no way to know how many you will need.  When DD was first born, she was going through 8-10 a day. Now it is more like 5 a day. I would only buy like one or two packs of NB. Then just focus on 1's and 2's. They will be in those the majority of the teme. DD is still in 4's and has a ways to go before she will outgrow them.

I've never understood why anyone would stock up on diapers.  Unless there's some kind of enormous sale, it's not like you can't just go out and get a pack as needed when the baby gets home.  Granted, you should have some on hand for those first days, but beyond that you really don't need a huge supply in the house.
  • Um, so far I have 5 small fuzzibunz and 5 medium fuzzibunz :)  I will be doing lots of laundry.

  • I really do not understand the stock up on diapers mentality. Why would anyone want 400+ diapers sitting in their house?? When DS came home, I ran out the day before and bought him a bag of newborn diapers. I would stock up on Newborn-- but again, only get a couple packs... just so you have those in the house.

But unless there is an ginormous sale-- which there never is-- it's not any cheaper to stock up on diapers now.

My DS is in size 3 right now, and I buy 2 boxes from Target at a time. That is more than enough diapers to last a month or so at my son's age... I only do that b/c Target is 45 minutes away though!

  • Unless you're getting a wide variety of brands, and taping the receipts to all of them, I don't see the logic. Most babies only fit in one particular brand well at first, and you won't know which until they're here! I have seen Target do sales where if you buy two boxes, you get a $5 GC, and I usually would have coupons too, so it would be a good deal, but I only did it once I knew that those brands would work.
  • I wouldnt advise stocking up before hand.  You have no way of knowing what brand will work best for your LO.  That said, once they hit size 3 they start staying in each size longer.

  • I also don't really get the stocking up on diapers thing - they are so easy to just go and buy as you need them and like several people have mentioned you don't really know what is going to work for your LO until they arrive. If you are trying to budget maybe consider putting the money on "diaper" gift cards that you take to buy diapers when you need them.
  • I agree with the other posts.

If you are wanting to stock up, why don't you get a gift card and put money on it now that why when you need diapers you have it on a gift card and can get the right size/brand.

  • DS went through exactly 20 newborn diapers before he outgrew them!!

  • Hey, I LOVE people who stock up!  They are the friends of mine who gave me tons of diapers because their kids outgrew them before they could use them all.

Just buy a small pack of newborn diapers and go from there.  You can buy 1s and 2s but if you don't like a particular brand you might have to return them anyway.  My DD actually needed preemie diapers for the first few weeks and that was totally unexpected.  You just never know.

My DD is almost a year old and still in size 3s.  She goes 5-7 diapers per day right now.  When she was an infant it was more like 10-12 per day.

  • Yeah it's silly to stock up on diapers. You have NO clue what kind of diapers will work for your child. For example, my son could not wear Huggies at all. He would leak out of them, no matter what. The only diapers we could use for her were Pampers. I don't recommend stocking up on any brand yet because you just don't know. My next child may leak out of the Pampers and I may have to go back to Huggies. Who knows!! I will buy a pack of Newborn Swaddlers when the next baby is born because that's what we used with DS, but I'm not going to stock up on them, just in case. Just get yourself gift certificates if you want to set aside money for diapers. That's more logical.

  • We're stocking up, during the 12 weeks I'm off the only thing we want to have to buy for baby is formula and running out to Target is the last thing I want to do with a new baby when it's 20 below zero.  We're going with the Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive, so far I haven't met anyone who these haven't worked for(crossing my fingers).  Plus my mom has been buying a ton for us and(because they'll be in FL for the winter right after baby is born) and I'm not turning down free diapers no matter what.

We're also stocking up on the non-drymax Pampers Swaddlers whenever we can find them.

    This.

We had a pack of NB pampers, and a pack of NB huggies. We brought home a pack from the hospital of NB pampers as well but had to go right out and find preemie diapers since she was small and wore those for the first 3 weeks.

Huggies diapers never fit her so we never used most of the NB pack we had bought. She then ended up being in NB diapers until almost 3 months because she didn't gain much weight while breastfeeding. When we weaned her to formula she put on 4lbs. in 7 weeks and went straight through size 1s in about 2 weeks and into size 2s.

It's SO hard to say how big your kid will be, what diaper(s) will work best, how long they'll be in one size vs. the next.

  • I will probibly buy 1-2 boxes of newborn and size 1 but that is it.. there is no need to buy more than that.. I figure I will need enough to get through the first few weeks so I want enough so I dont need to run out to the store ( eventhough I can walk to babies r us/target from my house!) I am having a c section so I know I will be out of comission for at least 2 weeks after I get home ie no driving. When we had ds we stocked up the same. ds was 8lbs and fit into newborn size for a while so we did not even use the size 1's until he was over a month old.

  • lol Im going to be in the minority. I work at a drugstore and get a fairly decent discount, I am stocking up on as much stuff now as possible while I still have it. We have a large house so Im not worried about storing it all. Ive only started buying diapers now, Im  only going to get 2 packs of newborn and focusing my attention on the other stages
