HSG... I'm worried.

I'm having an HSG on Friday.  I have been planning on walking 39 miles this weekend for an Avon Walk for Breast Cancer event.  Am I going to fell well enough to travel 300 miles and walk 39.  The posts I have read sound pretty terrifying. I would rather take Ibuprofen for the pain vs. the meds prescribed by my doctor. Any suggestions?

Re: HSG... I'm worried.

  • The pain during my HSG was pretty intense. Much more then I was prepared for. After it was over I had some mild cramping. You will be fine the next day. Good luck with your HSG and the Walk.

PS... if my Dr. had prescribed me pain killers to take I would have taken them. I thought the Ibprofen and Tylenol did nothing.

  • Mine was fine - it doesn't feel good by any means but it's a lot like a pap that lasted about 10 minutes. It's crampy, you'll feel pulling and it's uncomfortable. I went right back to normal life so I would say (depending on your experience of course) I would go ahead with my plans. I had a few hours of spotting but that was it!

The anticipation is worse, I took 3 Advil before and was fine. Good luck!

  • You should be fine. I won't lie, it is painful, but for most people the pain only lasts during the procedure (which is very quick) and once it is over, they don't have an issues. Some people have some spotting and cramping, but that's usually it.

I was fine right after it was done.

  • I was fine the next day - I'd take the meds on Friday and then on Saturday try to guage whether or not you can do it.  I think you should be ok.

    Good luck!

  • I am one who had alot of pain during my HSG, but I would have been fine later to walk. It only hurt during and then maybe for about another 30 mins afterwards. GL!

  • It definitely depends who you ask, but I was in pretty bad pain during and after. The good news is by the next day, I was totally fine. Definitely take the pain meds. GL to you.

When are you traveling?  My HSG was pretty awful but I bounced back quickly - it was mostly while it was going on that it was terrible.  I felt much better about an hour after it was done.

I would take whatever meds the doctor prescribed.  I only had ibuprofen and it did not help - well, maybe it did which is a not a pleasant thought (I tried to climb off the table during the procedure).

I don't want to scare you - just be prepared for the worst case scenario.  Although lots of girls on these boards had them with no issues at all.

  • My doc didn't prescribe me any meds.  It wasn't so bad.  I went back to work after my HSG.  The only discomfort I had was during the actual procedure - I thought I was going to jump off the table.  But once he was done (about 1-2 minutes later), most of the pain subsided.  I should have taken my ibuprofen a bit sooner to have its full effects.

I think you will be fine.

Also, I have heard that REs doing HSG aren't as painful as a radiologist doing it - that's what my RE says.  If he had done it, it wouldn't have been so bad.

    Good luck!

  • Mine too was also very painful.  I cringe thinking about it, but that being said once it was over I was completely fine.

    good luck!

  • My HSG was very painful and I was sore the rest of that day, but the next day I was fine.  Good luck with the HSG and best of luck on your walk!

ditto.  GL with the walk, awesome cause!

  • Mine was easy breezy.  I took 600mg IB before the HSG.

As pp mentioned, it depends who you ask.  I just wanted to offer my experience so you can get a fair comparison.

Yea, for walking!  I'm a survivor and appreciate when people support the cause.

I will be thinking of you and wishing the best experience.

  • I had a lot of fear of the unknown and read a bunch of horrer stories online. I ended up calling my RE office and having them prescribe Valium to calm me down. I also took 2 Alleve before I left the house. Since they knew I would be relaxed they went ahead and did an internal u/s the same day.

It was really not that bad, even though they made me turn onto my side during the HSG and I had the u/s.

    I ran a 5k a few days later. GL.

  • I am not going to lie, mine hurt like crazy but I went back to work and other than a little cramping I was fine. It was just during that I had pain. I know plenty of ladies who had no pain at all. Mine was all my old OB's lack of technique. GL!

  • Mine was really painful for a minute during the procedure, and I had slight cramps after, but I was completely fine later that day. I didn't need any prescription pain meds -- just popped some Advil when I got home.

This. I would like to add that the intense pain is over fast.

  • Everyone is different.  Mine was not a problem; some cramping when they injected the dye but nothing major.  I didn't enjoy leaking out dye for the next day or so, but no pain.  GL!

  • Mine was fine as well -- didnt feel the greatest during, it was a little uncomfortable, felt some pressure, lying there for 10 minutes or so with the speculum isnt exactly the greatest feeling. I took some tylenol before and was alright. After, I felt crampy, and spotted some. It wasnt horrid. I'd say go with your plans.

  • You should be okay.  I recovered pretty much immediately from my HSG, but totally took the opportunity to lie around and be lazy the rest of the afternoon after how stressed I had been about it :)  I was working out the next day.

  • I didn't take any pain medication, and I felt fine about fifteen minutes after the procedure. It's not pleasant while it's being done, but when it's over, it's over pretty quickly.

    GL at the walk :)

  • Not gonna lie - the pain for me was pretty intense, but it only lasted about 20 seconds.  Took some pain  meds afterwards and went home.  I easily could of worked that day, but I did take the day off from work.

    Good Luck.

  • I took 2-3 ibuprofen beforehand. It was terrible. During the procedure I said "nevermind, i don't want kids". Once it was over I was fine! A little sore when I would cough, but perfectly fine. I would think you'll be fine to walk. Good luck and enjoy your walk!
  • *I haven't read the other posts yet.

I was perfectly fine the next day. Except for some (TMI ALERT!) sticky discharge, hehe. A few painkillers should be enough.

Best of luck with both the HSG and the walk!

  • I just had my 2nd HSG done this morning.  I am good now.  I came home and took a nap and had some cramping, but when I woke up I was fine.  Don't change your plans prematurely.

     Enjoy the walk!

  • You will be absolutely fine. Just take motrin in the morning. Don't stress about it. mrshoppy was right in that it feels much like a pap smear. Good luck!

  • My HSG was terrible while it was happening, but I was fine afterwards.  I ended up with a blocked left tube and alot of scar tissue on the right tube.  Good luck Friday!

  • I would take the pain meds your doc prescribed...I wish mine had prescribed some, Tylenol did nothing!

FWIW, I had a complicated experience (short story: had to be catheterized twice) and I was fine the next day.  I ran 7 miles.

  • Mine was not a problem. The pain was intense but only for 5 minutes. If I was participating in a walk even as early as the next day, I would have been fine. GOOD LUCK!

  • It was very uncomfortable during the procedure, but I felt ok afterwards.  I had a little bit of spotting and cramping, but nothing more than a regular AF.  I had mine done in the morning and had to give a large presentation later that afternoon, and I was working out the next morning.  GL, take some pain meds, and you'll be fine.
