DH and I suck at Potty Training

Please school me on potty training. We have DS who is 2 1/2 years and DD who is 7 months. We are always so busy and when we do put DS in underwear on the weekends he pees all over our house. He never tells us he has to go to the potty even though he knows and says "Pee pee goes in the potty mommy!"

Anyway I know we aren't devoting enough time and effort to getting him potty trained but I am not sure how to make this happen when we are always out and about on the weekends, and both work full time and by the time we get home from work during the week we eat dinner, play have a bath and he goes to bed.

I know others are in the same boat so any advice would help.

I should also mention that DS wears pull ups now and does pee on the potty at daycare. He is stubborn at home though but again I know it is more of mine and DH's fault since we aren't on top of him about it and asking him if he has to go to the potty every hour or half hour.

Daycare is your #1 alli with PT.  Use it to your advantage.  Put him in underwear, pull ups are not your friend.  And don't count on him to tell you when he needs to go.  You are going to have to tell him, and tell him often, when he needs to go.  I'm willing to bet daycare tells him to go try every hour or more, and you need to do the same.  He's not going to PT himself.  You are going to have to do the work if you want him using the potty.  DH and I both work FT too and PT'ing DS has been SO much easier than I thought it would be.  Daycare really got him going with it and we just did the same at home.  I know you're busy in the evenings, but you have to figure out a way, whether it be a timer or something else, to remind yourself to have him go potty.  And you've got to get him out of those pull ups.  Pick a day to switch to underwear and don't go back.  (except for naps and nights)

I agree with the poster above. You need to go completely to underwear (except for sleep). Let him know that you have gotten rid of all of the pull-ups. You will need to remind him to use the potty. With time he will be able to hold it more. We have to watch the drinks my DD gets and plan her potty trip accordingly. We take her once she wakes up, before/after a meal, before going outside to play, before leaving the house. once we arrive at a location(store) and before leaving. If she drinks a whole cup of fluids we take her 15 minutes later. She does tell us when she need to use the potty, but she has the tendency to try to hold it too long because she does not want to leave her activity.

Thanks ladies. So moving to underwear full time it is. So how many outfits and extra pairs of underwear do you take to daycare? I am scared I may not have enough clothes.

I just moved DD to underwear FT.  She had about 4 accidents her first day.  To be safe, I sent something ridiculous like 10 pairs of underwear and spare shorts/pants.  But only 4 accidents.  FWIW, I found at home, letting her go around with nothing worked even better to train her to go to the bathroom.  Underwear she treated like pullups.  Oh and yes, definitely ditch the pullups first thing.  It gets too confusing for them.

We sent ALOT in the begining. I think like 10 pairs of underwear and 5 changes of clothes. She never used all of that, since they take them to the potty every hour. I would say she averaged 4-5 accidents in the begining.

I agree with going naked at home if you are willing to do it. We have hardwood floors so clean up was easy. My DD trained alot fast going naked, but when we had to leave the house we put underwear on.
