I've never been to a July 4 celebration, so we're thinking about going south of the border and seeing what the big fuss is about

Nah.. Mexico has "Cinco de Mayo" - which IMO is a much better holiday than the "Fourth of July".  Though if we called it "Cuarto de Julio" I could possibly be persuaded to a different opinion.
