Success after IF

How and when do I drop the last feeding before bed?

(Or move his bedtime up earlier?)

Right now DS eats approximately every 3 hours throughout the day. . . that takes us up until 7:00 or 7:30.  After that bottle he's awake for just a short while then takes a good hard nap.  Three hours would take us to 10:00 or 10:30, but sometimes he doesn't wake until 11:00.  We feed him again, then usually he sleeps through until 6:30 a.m. ish.

Sometimes he naps so hard before the last bottle that I wonder if he's going to wake up at all!  And, I'll be honest, sometimes when he naps later than 10:00 I "help" him wake up because *I'm* exhausted and ready to feed him and go to bed. Embarrassed  At those times I wonder if he'd just sleep right through it if I let him, but I'm not willing to risk him waking up at midnight or 2:00 a.m. if I can help it!

It doesn't seem like the first step would be to just try to skip a feeding (approx. 6 oz) altogether. . . but I can't figure out how to scooch his last feeding (and therefore his bedtime) up earlier when it depends on when he eats (3 hour intervals) throughout the day.  Make sense?

Any thoughts?  Thanks!

  • I tried not doing his dream feed at 3 months to see what would come of it, and he was awake at 3am. So I didn't attempt it again until he started solids at 4 months. At that time he was ready and slept until 6am which I could live with.

Every baby is different, but by three months, my LO was definitely sleeping through the night.  We started a 7/8 pm bedtime, and then once in bed, she just stayed there until the next morning without waking up.  She started doing this early though and our pedi said that as long as she was getting 8 good feedings during the day, she was fine to sleep through he night.  (That was earlier than three months though, so it was more important then that she get that many feedings as she was eating less at each one than she does now.)

  • we did a 10pm feed until 5mos... then their last bottle was at 7pm and went to bed around 7:30 and STTN.

I wouldn't drop it until he's ready.  That last stretch isn't a nap - it sounds like he's ready for bed at 7-7:30 ish.  Instead of waking him, try dreamfeeding him.  We did the dream feed until about 4-4.5 months at which point, G started letting  us know he was ready to cut it out, because he'd refuse his morning bottle.  Then we slowly weaned it away.

I'd put him down for the night at 7 -7:30.  Dreamfeed at 10 and just watch for cues in his morning feed as to when he's ready to cut it out.
