Belly Sleeping question

Caroline spent night #2 in the nursery last night.  She woke up twice to nurse (like she normally does).  We put her down the last time at 2am, and its almost 8am and she is still asleep (she went to bed at 7pm).  Yay for Caroline!

The kicker?  She's on her belly.  Face down...well, to be specific, her face is smushed into her mattress.  I don't like that.

For the last two nights, we put her down swaddled, and she sleeps like that awhile, then breaks out of her swaddle and sleeps on her side for awhile, then sleeps on her belly the rest of the night.

I know that she can roll around, and she's super strong.  I just don't like this face smushed into the mattress.  There's nothing I can do, right?

Oh, and I'm about to be a PW, btw ;-)

Re: Belly Sleeping question

  • This used to make me so nervous too.  As long as she is on a firm crib mattress with a tight fitted sheet, she is fine.  Once they can roll, it is a losing battle to try and position them.  They will sleep where they are comfy.

Is her face smushed in a way that her nose isn't getting air?  You can move her head to the side.  I was sometimes surprised that Gabrielle's face looked smushed, but was actually slightly side tilted.  She moves her head around so I wasn't ever worried.  It's not like there are any pillows or blankets and the mattress is firm.

  • If she's able to lift her head, she's fine. At that age they will know when they are smooshed, and should move their head. My kid was doing this at 3 weeks old ( thank God )

    Yay for belly sleepers

  • I agree with everyone else! Firm mattress, tight fitted sheet, and if she is able to move her head, she is ok! Also like it was mentioned if want move her head to the side. I have two belly sleepers since a few weeks old they are now almost 20 months and 7 months old!
