bouncy seat, swing or both?

(can you tell I am trying to finish my shopping?)

So my product question of the day ... I really want to buy one of the motorized swing thingies for our little guy, but the one I want is $170. We have a little bouncy seat thing already that we got as a gift. DH doesn't understand why I want one that rocks and vibrates and all that fancy stuff so my question is ... is it worth it to buy the more expensive one that has all the motion and stuff to it? And if I do, do I still need the bouncy seat too? I am trying to decide if I want to return the bouncy seat and put that money towards the swing, or if I am going to want both.

Any input or opinions?

Re: bouncy seat, swing or both?

  • i got a graco swing that vibrates and plays music.  after a 20% off coupon and some $ off coupons that we got from signing up for the BRU credit card, got it for $90.  it was nice to have the bouncer tho too b/c I could bring that upstairs with me and put him in it while i showered, etc.  you could also do that with the carseat tho.
  • I don't know how comfortable you are with buying used things, but I bought my swing and jumperoo used. I got the fisher price swing for $40, sold it for $35 and then bought my jumperoo for $40. They were both in excellent condition. I used the swing for a total of 4 months, I saw no point in buying it new for 120. Just my .02.

Oh and as for a bouncy seat, I would recommend having it in addition to a swing, it is nice to have something portable to hold the baby.

  • I have both although we got them both second hand. Our seat doesn't bounce though, it is more like a baby papasan chair and it vibrates and plays music. It has been a lifesaver! That is where she slept most of the time for the first couple weeks and she still goes there while I shower. The swing is great too because we can use it to help her fall asleep sometimes and she likes ti sit up in it and look around the room. With the fisher price zen one, the seat is detachable so it is kinda like a two for one, but they probably won't like it much beyond about 3 months because they will want to be able to sit up more and look around. With the ones we got, I didn't have any problem taking the covers off and washing them, so you could definitely get them used.
  • I would recommend both.  I liked them both for different reasons.  It was nice to sit Rowen in the bouncy seat while I cooked dinner (I just set it on the island in the kitchen) or took a shower.  It was very portable so I could also take it to the grandparents house with us if I wanted to.  I liked the swing because Rowen wanted to be held ALL THE TIME and it was the only place I could get him to fall asleep without having to hold him the entire time.  I got my bouncy seat as a gift and I had a hand me down swing.  I got rid of the swing after Rowen and just bought a used one at Once Upon a Child for cheap!  I would recommend looking into used ones if that doesn't bother you.  Mine looks brand new and works perfectly.

  • I am totally guilty of already having both of them.  I would recommend buying used, but if you want new you may want to start off with one of them.  From there see how you make out and decide whether you want the second one.
  • I have both.  My thinking was that I would keep one on each floor.  I'm picturing keeping the swing in the living room and the bouncer upstairs.
  • We got a swing & the seat lifts out to be a full independent bouncy swing with vibration.  Most of my friends with babies have said that they loved the bouncy seats that vibrate.  I'm thinking it will be nice to take the bouncy seat upstairs while I'm getting ready, etc.  It was $120 after coupons, so I thought that was a pretty good deal for both, & it only takes up the room of 1 item!
  • Funny you should ask cause DH and I had a mini-debate yesterday about why we need both! He wanted to return the bouncy seat and keep the swing but I explained why the bouncy seat would be helpful since it's more portable and I know babies love to vibrate. He then said if that's the case, then let's get rid of the swing! I then had to make a case for the swing. He looked so confused! LOL! I told him if it turns out she doesn't like one of them or both we can always sell them on Craigslist.
  • I have both but I started with the bouncy seat.  The bouncey seat is by far her fave but each kid is different.  I like it because I can move it to the bathroom to shower, then the kitchen to make dinner, then to the livingroom and it is light and easy to move.

We bought a swing at Ross for $40.  It plays music and swings but it doesn't vibrate.  She can take it or leave it.  And it bums we out since we spent money on it.  But it does seem like everyday she like it a bit more.

I would say start with a bouncy and then get the swing if you feel like he needs it.

  • I have both.....G loves her swing, she takes all her naps in it....She just started to like her bouncy recently, but none the less loves that too....I say if you can buy both....
  • We have both and I don't seen them as interchangeable at all.

The swing is a place where baby can go to relax/calm down/sleep and the bouncy is a safe place to put baby while you're doing other things and you want to bring baby with you. I'm glad we have both. Hopefully baby will like them!

  • Thanks for all of the input ladies! This definitely helps and I definitely see the need for both, but needed some reassurance.

Now...how to convince DH we need both ... hmmm.

  • Yes, you definitely need a bouncy seat.  It travels around the house, its light weight, some vibrate, and if you're lucky, your LO will love spending time in it.  Also, I believe the bouncy seats have a greater weight/ size limit than most swings so you can use it longer.

As for a swing... I think it depends on a couple of factors. Do you have a dog? Would the swing be in a area where the dog could potentially knock it over? Will you LO be home most of the day or be at another location? Do you have the space? IMO the swing is more of an option becasue you can also have an exersaucer, a jumperoo, a playmat, etc.

BRU is going to continue to have sales and send you coupons, so you can always go back and get it later.  Though I do completely understand feeling the need to be completely prepared before your LO arrives.
