Babies: 3 - 6 Months

since theres a lot of solids questions today...(re:bottle too)

i have another one :)

We're starting DD on solids in a week or so. What do you do with the bottle & solids?

Do i give her a bottle THEN the cereal?  Do i give her cereal then the bottle? Or do i stop the bottle half way through, do cereal, then finish the bottle? (scared about this one, bc if shes not done, she SCREAMS until i give it back)

 thanks!

  • Some people give the bottle first then the solid about 1 hour later.  With DS I give the bottle first then give him solids directly after he burps from that feeding.

  • DD's cereal does not replace a bottle/breast feeding at all at this point.  We just started over the weekend.  I usually do cereal in the morning about an hour or so after her first regular feeding.  I will do it again in the evening around dinner time somewhere in between feedings.

My LO eats every 4 hours so i would give him his 6oz let's say 8 am feed  him cereal 10 am and then 6 oz 12pm. and then around 2pm baby food and the his bottle at 4pm. and for the rest of the night just regular bottles.
  • Cereal, then wash it down with the bottle. Also you may want to keep bottle out of sight. If lo sees his "easy food" he might not be so willing to try food he has to work for
  • You may have to try a few things out. DS wasn't interested in anything when he had just finished his bottle. He was too full to care. On the other hand, before his bottle, he was too hungry to want anything but the bottle (had not yet realized that the cereal was food, too, and would fill his tummy). The best time to give him solids is 1 hour after a bottle. If we fed him solids at the same time as the bottle, we'd only be feeding him 5 times instead of the current 7, but this is working out best for us right now.

    oooh good tip! thanks!

  • We just met with our Pedi this morning and his suggestion was 1tbs of cereal at breakfast followed by a bottle and then the same at dinner time.  Once we had introduced a couple different kinds, then to keep the cereal and then introduce a veggie at lunch and dinner, one at a time to rule out anything she may be intolerant to!  HTH!
