Effects of transitioning to milk?

Sorry if this is long...We started adding whole milk to Maddy's bottles, just 1/4 oz at a time when she turned 1.  We are now up to 1 full oz of milkand 3.5 oz soy formula.  The pedi said some babies get either constipation or diarrhea from this.  DD has had the worst diarrhea ever since we started, she is having it up to 3-4 times a day and she is just miserable, crying!  So, we decided to just do the formula only over the weekend and we had no problems at all, back to her happy self, no diarrhea.

Anyone have this experience? Am I doing something wrong in mixing the milk, am I giving too little? Anyone not do cow's milk, I don't even know if babies can have soy milk. I am going to call the pedi later this week but just thought you ladies might have insight as well!

We only started out so slow because we believe she may have had lactose intolerance like myself and my dad, which is why we switched to soy formula too.  DH was also strictly on goat's milk as an infant because he had lactose issues which he outgrew.

Re: Effects of transitioning to milk?

  • it sounds to me like her tummy just isn't ready for cow's milk.  could be lactose intolerance, could be milk protein intolerance, could just be immature gut response.  a lot of LOs have issues with cow's milk.  i would probably try another kind of milk for a while.  soy isn't generally recommended in large quantities but there are tons of other choices - oat, hemp, almond, coconut...  my LOs were on hemp milk for a couple months before i intro'd cow's milk.
