Helmet Question

So, one of my boys is getting fitted for a helmet on Thursday.  I am so torn!  I want do everything we can to correct his flat head.... but it is summer and I think it is going to be so hot and uncomfortable.   Does anyones LO have wear one?  How is it?  How often do you have to clean it?  Do they adjust to it quickly? TIA.

Re: Helmet Question

  • I don't have an answer but am curious to see what everyone says, we go in for an appt to see if he needs one on Friday.

  • My oldest had one.  She got it in August when she was 5 months and I was so stressed out about it.  But she adapted really well to it and her head is perfect now.  She only wore it for about 2.5 months.  I cleaned it whenever it started to smell with rubbing alcohol.  It was harder on us than it was on her, now its just a distant memory.  If there is a chance your child needs one, I'd recommend you do it.
  • My DS had a helmet, although not really in the summer. We got it when he was 4 months old and he wore it until about 7 months. Then until 8 months he wore it only while sleeping. At first, he didn't like it, but after a couple days it was fine. We never had any issues with him sleeping bad in it, if anything he slept better. We had to clean it every day b/c they do sweat. You just wash it out with soap and water, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol, and rinse it out and let it air dry. You can leave it off for an hour every day to do this. We just did it during him bath time.

PM if you have more questions.

  • Kieran's in his now and it's been stinkin' hot lately.  He does get sweaty and his head stinks, but he doesn't seem to mind.  We just keep him dressed lightly when we're not inside with the AC on.

We wipe out his helmet 2x/day and wash his hair every night.  We're lucky enough that he only has to wear his helmet for 18 hours a day though.  If your LO needs his for 23 hours you'll probably only be able to clean it once during bath time.

Let me know if you have any questions :)

  • My DD had a StarBand helmet. She got it right around 5months and got it off in May, around 8.5 months. We live in Florida so it was hot here for the last 2 months that she was in it.  We just dressed her very lightly.  She adapted to it fairly well.  She had to wear hers for 23 hours a day, so we washed her hair everynight and cleaned the helmet with 91% rubbing alcohol every night during her hour bath & break.

We are so pleased with DD's results. I know it can be very stressful and nerve-racking but it is so worth it!

    Best of luck!

  • My daughter is 6 months old and has been in her helmet since May wearing it 23 hours a day.  I had a hard time adjusting to her wearing it but she doesn't even notice it...we even live in Louisville where it is crazy humid.  As for the heat, I don't have her in the sun for long periods of time and if we are outside I try to keep her in the shade.  We clean her helmet each night with 50% alcohol and 50% water during the hour she has it off which is usually bath time and boy does it stink when you initially take the helmet off each night.  Overall, the experience hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be and if you want to get creative with it...decorate it yourself or go to www.blingyourband.com which has some really cute designs for those lacking in creativity like myself!

  • Ryan gets his helmet next week on Monday! My cousin's daughter had one too and it really didn't seem to bother her.

  • Dylan is on day 3 of his helmet so we are still in the first week of gradually using it. On day one, he cried when we put it on. Once we distracted him he was fine. After that, he doesn't cry when we put it on or take it off. He's in it now and playing like normal. He really doesn't seem to notice it on his head. When we take it off, his head is wet with sweat and smelly, but otherwise he's fine.

I'm having a harder time adjusting. I hate putting it on him. I keep going to kiss his head and kissing helmet and that makes me sad. I'm already ready for it to be over.

  • Oh ladies, thank you so much!  You have made me feel so much better.  I really appreciate all the helpful tips.  I do know it will be harder for me than for him.  :-)  Thanks again!
