Charles would have been Gretchen Matilda if he wasn't Charles Henry, so of course I love it.
We have a very German last name and Matilda is a family name, even tho it's getting more popular these days. Gretchen is still "normal" but not very often used. And as Charlie Harper says on "Two and a Half Men," it has a built in GRRRRR! HA!
Shhhh... we're still planning to use it if we have a girl someday!

Definitely harsh. There was this girl I played soccer against in college (she was on our rival team) named this, and I thought she was kind of a b!tch.

Harsh... that's definitely the word I was looking for. I don't think it sounds pretty or feminine at all.
I want to like it. I really do.
But every time I see it or hear it I think "wretched"

I like it, although I'm not sure I would use it as a stand-alone name.
When we were considering using Margaret, Gretchen and Greta were our two nickname choices.
