WDYT: Taft

I heard the name Taft the other day and loved it for a boy with our middle name choice, Evans.  I had never heard that name up until the other day.  My husband and I like it alot but I'm not sure if I love it because of how different it is or if we just love it.  I need opinioins please!  Thanks!

Re: WDYT: Taft

  • Personally, hate. But at least it's not cutesy. And no one will mispronounce it.

  • Well I guess it would be a logical step in the Presidential naming phase...

NMS and IMO it does not work with Evans at all, the kid is going to have 3 last names and no firsts...

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • While William Howard Taft should be famous for being the only POTUS to also serve as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, he is mostly famous for being fat.

  • A very, very hefty President.  Huge.
  • Sounds more like a last name to me.
  • If you've never heard of it before then you must have failed history.
  • Reminds me of William Howard Taft and how he got stuck in the bathtub... Sorry :(

  • I know that using surnames as first names is a popular trend right now, but Taft is just too much of a last name IMO.  It seems a little pretentious to be honest.

  • I don't like it at all, definitely not my style....but if you love it, use it!
  • I think its great..  original without being too out there.  Strong male name...

  • I really like the last name as a first name trend, but I'm not in love with Taft. Again, though- if you love it, do it!

  • Yeah, a really big big president.  And not exactly a stellar one, either.

Tate is fairly similar and not all that overused.

  • I wouldn't personally choose it - 1) it is too close to "daft" for me and 2) The president was rather large.

  • I really like it! It sounds nice, is easy to spell/pronounce, and is not something that would be turned into a nickname.  I think it would be adorable on a little boy, and would grow well into adulthood.

    Yes

  • Just add it to the presedential surname list...  Carter, Reagan, Kennedy, Truman, Jackson, Madison, Harrison, Taylor, Grant, Arthur, Ford....  Now we have Taft.

FWIW, some of those names are fine and don't even ring "presidential" when I hear them.  But Taft goes a little too far and is NMS.

  • Reminds me of the President Taft that was so big that he got stuck in the bathtub.  He was also the President who set the precedent of ignoring the 15th amendment and turned his eye on lynchings at the time.  I like American Presidential History and I'm not a big fan of his...

  • I really like it. My first thought was of the president, but I don't think that is a bad association.

Personally, NMS . . . and I can remember playing a game in school in about the fourth grade, where we were given weird facts, one for each president of the United States and had to identify said president by researching those facts--the fact for Taft? He wore a bigger hat than any other President. Still remember it today. Remember it and his giant head. And, sadly, that's what I think of when I think about you naming a baby Taft--a baby with a giant head.

  • Hate it.

    Very presidential.

This. I immediately thought of the President. To me this is not a last name that transitions well into a fisrt name.

  • LOVE it! Totally my style!

    Hahahahahaha!

    Taft = Fat + T = Fatty

    Good luck!

Thanks for not DDing, so I could actually see this gem, instead of only hearing about it later!

  • I went to HS with a Taft. He was a cool kid, a jock. We worked at Fazoli's together senior year. I don't have anything negative to say about the name.
