NBR Vent: Generic BCP Discontinued!

So as most of you know, I'm "one and done" but neither DH nor I wanted to do anything permanent to ensure that. So I've been taking the generic version of Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo, which is Tri-Lo Sprintec.  It's been working out great for me.

With my DH's insurance, Tier 1 drugs (Ortho) have a $50 copay per month and generics (Tri-Lo Sprintec) is $10.  Since our budget is tight, I want generic only.

Well the manufacturer of Tri-Lo Sprintec is NOT making it any more.  DH picked up my 3 months supply of pills last week?which I expected to cost $30?and it was $150!  The pharmacy never told me they didn't have the generic and filled the name brand (they did let me return 2 months' worth, I had to start the pack yesterday).

So I'm waiting for a call back from my OB with a new Rx. And I hope my body adjusts to the new pill. I've been on Ortho (when my copay was less) for years and it clears my skin and I have no side effects.

Grrr!

That sucks! I'm sorry Robyn. Hopefully there's another generic that you can find that works just as well.
  • Loading the player...
  • What a PITA!  Years ago, I used to take the generic for Triphasil.  Then I went off for several years and then started taking another generic...I forget what it was.  I had tried what you take and it made me nauseaus (sp).  Hopefully your system will adapt with no problems to whatever the new Rx will be.

  • Sounds like now is a good time to look into a more permanent solution, if you are sure you are one and done.

  • Oh, that stinks! I am sorry. I hope you find something that works. What about the Mirena (sp) it isn't permanent, but is cheaper than repeated co-pays, esp at THAT rate! I have heard that sometimes AF gets lighter/less often - BONUS!

  • Have you talked to your OB about the mini pill or mirena?  I can't remember the name, but know the mini pill has at least one generic, and if your insurance covers mirena, it could be just $50 for 5 years of coverage!
  • I hadn't thought of Mirena... something to consider.  Though at this point, I'll probably try another BCP until my annual in December and I'll discuss other options then.

Neither DH nor I want to have surgery?just in case we change our minds. We're not planning to... but we don't want to do anything permanent yet.
