book recs?

Hi Ladies, I posted a bit over on the MSP Knot board before my weddding (under a different screen name) last year and now I'm just starting to browse over here a bit.  I'm not pregnant yet, but I would like to become better informed.  Specifically, I'm trying to find a couple of good books on pregnancy.  There are tons of them out there, wondering if there are some that any of you have found more helpful than others?  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

Re: book recs?

  • I really like the Dr. Sears book on pregnancy. I am not a huge fan of the What to Expect book other than the labor and delivery chapters towards the end.

  • Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great book to learn more about how the female body works.  It also gives tips for charting to avoid and/or get pregnant.  You can also check out their website at www.tcoyf.com.

Another helpful website is www.fertilityfriend.com.  If you do decide to chart your cycles for a better chance of conceiving, this is a great site.  There are several free versions.  If you like the bells and whistles more, I think the full VIP is only $45/year.

There is also a Getting Pregnant board on the Nest and a Trying to Get Pregnant board on the Bump.  Both are very helpful but you may want to lurk a little bit to get the feel of the boards first.  Some of the regulars can be a little rough on newbies.  If you read TCOYF first, it will answer a lot of the questions you may have about getting pregnant.

I agree with the pp about not being a big fan of the "What to expect.." books.  I feel I've learned so much more from the GP board and other people's real life experiences.  (Once you do get pg, I would avoid the tri boards.)

  • definitely TCOYF for TTC.

When you get pg, I loved Your Pregnancy Week by Week. I also really liked A Thinking Woman's Guide to Better Birth.

Stay far, far away from the What to Expect series. They would be more correctly titled "What to Irrationally Panic About When You're Expecting".

  • I am reading the "What to expect..." book right now and I really don't think it's that bad. I want to know all the possible things that could happen/ go wrong etc. It hasn't freaked me out yet. Definitely read Taking Charge of Your Fertility, it's a great book.
