Pregnant with Chrons??

Anyone in the baltimore area that has a good midwife or OBGYN who has experience with pregnant chrons patients?  This is my first pregnancy and I would really like to go natural with a midwife.  When I called to make an appt with the midwives at University of MD downtown I was told since I have chrons I am automatically high risk and not allowed to see the midwives.  Boo!!  I am ok seeing an MD instead of a midwife but I really want to go the natural route and would like to find a doc to supports that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

 Thanks ladies Smile

  • Have you asked your gastro?  I don't have crohns but my husband does and his gastro is great about things like this so you might want to check with yours.  Good luck.

  • I did and they had one recommendation.  I called the office to make an appointment and did not get a very good vibe. First they told me I wouldnt just see the doc I was referred to but everyone in the practice which is fine...I understand you have to see all the doctors in case your doctor isnt available when you go into labor, but at the same time when I explained why I was asking to see this specific doc the woman on the phone did not seem to care much.  Also when I started asking questions about supporting natural childbirth (I really want to try to go natural...especially since the chrons and c-section = high risk of infection) their response was "I guess if you can handle it" I said thank you and hung up the phone.  It is so hard calling these doc office and trying to get some info!  Generally the people who answer the phone arent very helpful or knowledgeable and are always in a hurry!  I really wanted to find a midwife in the area but have not had much luck yet!
  • Sorry I can't help you but my exbf had Crohns and my DH has colitis.  I know that it is not easy to deal with.  I hope you find the right dr.

  • I have crohns and just had a baby.  My GYN,  Dr. Sandra Quartner at GBMC, is awesome and was awesome through my whole pregnancy.  I am currently in remission are you in remission?  My GYN did everything in her power to help me avoid a c-section.  I had a resection several years ago and as a result had scar tissue issues and she did not want to cause more issues for me.  She did not want me to be induced with meds because she was afraid it was cause me to need a c-section.   Once I was 8 days overdue it was decided that I needed to be induced (the baby never dropped and I was not dilating).  She did a folly bulb induction hoping that would get things going but I got to three and nothing else happened.  After being at three for 7 hours she did order a medical induction.  It took all day but I did not need a C.  I feel any other doctor would have ordered a c-section but my doctor really saw me as a whole person and what that would mean for me in the long run and not just for the pregnancy.  I will say she is a no nonsense kind of person and will tell you if she does not like what you are doing if you are looking for someone to be warm and fuzzy she may not be your woman.  What I liked about her was she treated me and not just the pregnancy.  She always took my condition into consideration before making any suggestions.  The only thing she did tell me she would have to do is cut me.  She was not going to risk me tearing because I could have ripped from front to back which can  cause a fistula and the crohns to go crazy.  If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.
