Shopping for breast pumps ... help!

So I went to BRU today to get some final things off my registry but have some higher priced items I am trying to decide on, and do some research about, before I spend the money.

I am trying to pick a breast pump and am so confused. I know most people use the Medela, but I am curious what makes it so much better (and more expensive) than the other brands? Is it worth spending the extra money or are there other brands that just aren't as popular that work just as well?

Any experience or info, or good places to get a good deal, would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Jen, do you have AIM?

ETA: Forget it, I'll just type it in here.

I have two pumps.  One good (Medela PISA) and one average.  The good one has two phase pumping - one hardcore fast phase that gets your letdown going, then the longer more hardcore sucking phase that draws all the milk out.  It bruised the crap out of my nips when I first started using it, but we're all good now.  The MiPump is the other one I have and is great to travel with and does it job and just that.  Both are fine.

  • ya, its linked in my google chat ... wanna chat? hehe
  • I have the Medela Pump in Style.....I got it based on what others said & my gf that used to work at BRU (she also highly recommended getting the service plan as well.....said you'd be surprised how they can crap out).

Your  other option is to possibly rent from the hospital (I've heard this is dirt cheap, as in a few $ a day) if you don't want to drop that much cash early on & try to figure out if BF will work for you & your LO.

It was covered under my insurance.  You can check into that too.

I also have the Pump in Style.  And I love it.  I have no idea what makes it better than other pumps though.

  • I have the medela PISA too. I got it from my best friend, she had a playtex before and she said the Medela was worth the extra money, although I didn't ask her why. I know it only takes me about 10 minutes to pump at work. Amazon is a good place to find reviews if you want to look into others.
  • I too have the Medela Pump In Style, but am borrowing it from a friend. I have not used any other pump so I am no help with that, but I can say I do like the Medela very much....but than again I have nothing to compare it too.
  • I used the Medela PIS as well, but have nothing to compare it to.

Watch the BRU ads/coupons.  I got mine for about 20% off with a coupon.
