PIO Lumps?

After the mishap with my PIO shot yesterday where I did it myself and had to do two shots bc of leakage, I noticed I have a lump where I did the shot. It's still really sore/painful. Do you think the lump is swelling/irritation from the shot, or just a lump of oil? Of the oil lumps, does your body still absorb the progesterone the way it's supposed to?

Re: PIO Lumps?

  • They'll work themselves out.  It seems to help by going slow with the injections.  Also, sitting on the heating pad and "rubbing it in" helps too.  GL!!
  • Just a lovely s/e of the oil...they do eventually go away, but they will stay as long as you are doing the PIO.  Like pp said, a heating pad usually helps, you just have to sit on it for awhile.  I would get restless and get up, and when I did my lumps would be worse.

    This.

To help prevent leakage, you can leave the needle in there for a few seconds after all of the PIO is in. The other day my dh didn't realize that he left a good amount of PIO in the syringe so I had to do a second shot. That definitely doesn't help either.

  • Yes your body will absorb it, but just at a slower rate.

The lump will go away over time.  That has happened to me and it was quite painful when sitting!

  • I have a few of these lumps, I know they are very common, I don't seem to remember them as much the last time I went through IVF.  I use an ointment called Arnica, its amazing, it mainly helps with the bruising.  my acupuncturist recommended it.  I asked my RN today and she advised to ice the area before the PIO shot then the heating pad after the shot.
