How many bottles?

How many bottles--and in what sizes--would you say we should have on hand right away? I got a few starter kits for shower gift--a Dr. Brown's and a Tommy Tippee. The kits obviously come with several sizes and several nipples. I assume I'll start with the smallest bottles and the slow-flow nipples, but I'm not sure how many of each I'll need.

We're planning on breastfeeding and pumping.

Re: How many bottles?

  • We use cheepie Evenflo's (3 for $3) and they would well for us.  IMO, don't waste your money on expensive bottles until you think you need them, if you have to replace the cheap ones, it's not going to cost you much (plus if you forget one in the car and it gets gross, it's not a big loss).
  • We use Playtex drop ins, and formula feed, so it may be a bit different.

We are currently using only 4oz bottles, and do about 8 feeds a day.  We have 8 bottles and 8 slow flow nipples, so we get 4 feeds each out of this before having to wash the nipples and refill the bottles.  I love the drop ins because we don't have to wash the bottles too.  This is working great so far for us.  I haven't stocked up too much yet on the larger bottles and faster nipples.  I'm waiting to see how often they'll eat etc.

  • We only washed once a day and had 24 bottles.

Now, at 4 months, we could get by with 14.

  • That's all you'll need at first. Then it depends on how often you want to wash them.
  • I formula fed and pumped.  We started with 16 of the Dr. Brown's 4 oz widenecks with Level 1 nipples.  My twins came home from the NICU on a Q3hr feeding schedule so with 16 bottles we only had to wash bottles once a day.  Now that they are eating more and less often, so I'm gradually replacing the 4oz's with 8oz's and Level 2 nipples.  We can get away with 12 now.  They are expensive, but my DS has reflux and these have been very helpful at reducing his discomfort while feeding.
