Cupcakes or cake for party??

Cupcakes are soooo much easier....and I like the fact that a cupcake is a perfect (well still probably too big) size for GiGi....but, should I really have a cake for her first birthday??  ( I realize this is not the most important question ever, just curious on your opinions)

So, what do you prefer/suggest:  all cupcakes, just cake, or both??

Thanks!!

Remind me to ask you this next year at this time. ;)

Clearly I have no advice, but can't believe that your little girl is about to be one!!!!

  • If you're good with a cupcake for GiGi's photo (which it sounds like you are and I would be!), then I say stick with cupcakes - will be adorable!

  • Our original plan was to get Megan an individual cupcake decorated to match the cake that would be served to our guests.      Our rsvps were slow to come in so I ended up changing from a 1/2 sheet cake down to a 1/4 sheet.  Then I freaked out that it wouldn't be enough and ordered an additional 24 cupcakes as a pull-apart cake from Target.  As it turned out we had way too much cake.

Megan was not interested in her cake.  She put her hand in it with a little encouragement, but really didn't eat much of it.  I'm glad we went with an individual cupcake for her.

Knowing our family, they really like cake.  Not sure if cupcakes convey the same feeling as a piece of cake.

  • I hate slicing cake so I did all cupcakes. I hate when people hover over me and try and tell me how big or small of a piece they want or how they want a lot of frosting or hardly any frosting.  It drives me nuts....just sit down and eat your damn cake! Lol!

Hannah's was the same as the rest of the cupcakes. She takes after her mama because she had no problem figuring out what to do with it and would have ate the whole thing if I hadn't taken it away!  I bought cupcake boxes from Sur La Table so I sent home left over cupcakes with my parents, ILs, and grandma. I already had the boxes assembled and I had 2 different sizes so it was really easy to pop the cupcakes in them.  It seemed easier than trying to slice up left over cake.

Geeze, I sound like such a cake hater!  I like it just fine when someone else is dealing with it!

  • We did all cupcakes.  It is so much easier for everyone, particularly easier for the kids and for parents chasing after kids.
  • we did cupcakes for DD's first birthday and they were so easy and everyone loved them.  the photos we have of her eating the cupcake are hilarious.
  • I did cupcakes for the girls (actually, that was the theme of their party - "they're oh so cute and so much fun, our sweet little cupcakes are turning one!") I used a cupcake stand, you know the tiered one so that they look like a cake all put together. It was so cute and the cupcakes were the perfect size for the girls. I made enough so that the guests could have a couple since cupcakes are smaller than a slice of cake.

  • I love to bake and will make LO's cake.  I will probably do a cake and cupcakes but it will end up depending on the theme.  I like the idea of a cake for a 1 year old just for the photo op but just cupcakes would be great also.
  • i'd do both.

we did a cake - bought it (for the adults = we had to cancel our party, but just had the grandparents there).

and I did a mini cake (also bought) for him.  that went over well, but he didn't eat much of it, but for photo opps

I think a cupcake would be awesome....for the LO and the cake for the rest unless you are having lots of kiddos.  I think cake is more important when they are oder and they can blow out candles, etc.

  • We did a cupcake pull-apart cake for DS first birthday.  It worked perfectly as he was able to "crash' a section without trashing an entire cake.   Also worked nicely as many of the guests were with children making it easier to eat.  Have fun and enjoy the planning.
