Toddler moms: what is a good food for avoiding constipation?

Of course, DS has pebbles all the time and pedi said he shouldn't have those.

He only likes stuff that causes it too....bananans, apples, rice, and toast/bread....and cheese

what is good to help him along...we give him juice which helps, but I really can't give him juice everyday even watered down...think he gets too much sugar - even if it is natural sugar.

  • Applesauce is supposed to help with constipation... not sure why it would be making him constipated.

What about a bran cereal? Will he eat anything like that? DD likes Raisin Bran.

Make sure he's drinking a lot of water as well.  That will help.

  • We battle with constipation too. Luckily, Elizabeth will still let me feed her prunes some of the time. My pediatrician recommends adding a tsp of flax seed oil or tbsp of flax seed meal to her food. It helps with constitpation and has the good omega 3 fats too.

Or if your LO likes breads, try whole wheat or anything with fiber. E loves a toasted waffle for breakfast, so I buy the nutra grain or Kashi kind. Peas and black beans are good for fiber too. So are cheerios and graham crackers!

  • Thanks ladies!  DS drinks a TON of water. hmm.

he also eats cheerios and graham crackers and peas.

I'll try blueberries and maybe more whole grain bread.  we eat wheat bread, but I don't know.

    Thanks again!

  • in our house watered down prune juice, beans, peas, whole wheat pasta and tons of water do the trick!! hth!

  • The apple thing is tricky. appleSAUCE is constipating as are apples but apple JUICE has enough concentrated sugar to be mildly laxative.

Any P foods - peach, pear, peas...

    Grapes and carrots

  • thanks ladies again!  I'll try more beans.  maybe peaches and pears.
  • We have the same pebble problem with Stella.  I just read in Dr. Sears' Baby Book to try the flax seed oil.  I'm heading out to buy some myself.  I also know people who use Miralax with a lot of success.  I'm going to try the flax seed oil first and then may give her Ped a call about the Miralax.  We do prune juice and that hasn't helped much...shockingly enough!  It worked when she was younger.

  • Def Blueberries in our house
  • We have this problem too, didn't realize how common it really is until your post!  We do watered down apple juice and lots of fruit - pears, blueberries, strawberries, etc.  I don't like giving her a lot of juice either, but it certainly seems to do the trick.  Good luck!
  • Definitely apple sauce and lots of fruits and vegetables.  I still feed Ben Gerber baby food prunes every morning for breakfast and he gets a fruit and vegetable with every meal.  He just turned 3 and still goes 2-3 times a day.
