Yard Sale... How to get ready?

Man, we have so much stuff!  I don't even know where to start to get ready for a yard sale.  Any tips?

Re: Yard Sale... How to get ready?

  • Get tables set up and have seperate piles clothes, house hold, glass etc. Then start making price tags (optional) I have been to a few and you have to ask how much. BUT anyways.. then just arrage everything nice and neat outside. You want to make sure your money maker items are front and center. Make stuff visible from the street.. thats how you draw them in to buy!! Good Luck! Hope that helped a little!

  • We had one a few weeks ago. I made a huge pile of everything in my living room, and on the day of the sale carried everything out and priced it after it was set up.

Did you need help w/pricing? If so what sorts of items do you have?

That does help!  I will start that this weekend.  Getting same type items in piles will make it easier.

We have a lot of house hold items, and we just sold our travel trailor, and it was stacked with dishes, and stuff like that.  But, I'll be getting rid of baby boy stuff since I'll be having a girl this time.  I have no clue how to price that stuff!  .50 per item?

  • .50 cents i think is good for onesies and somethings.. but try to get some money for your things! Take into consideration how much YOU spent on it and what you would pay for at a yard sale yourself. Glad i could help!

  • I put anything large and anything baby related near the street so it's visible. For baby clothes, I put them in a big box on a tarp (since people tear through it and throw things on the ground!) , then put out a sign saying $1 each. Most people will bring you 8 things and ask to pay $5, etc., and I almost always say yes unless they're being ridiculous.

I get cash beforehand - usually at least $50, and make sure to have most of it in $1s and $5s. During the sale I just put the money in my pockets, so I don't have to watch a cashbox somewhere. I'll put big bills on one side, small and change in the other so I have an easier time making change for people fast.

I grab a pile of paper or plastic grocery bags so people can bag their things. We'll usually keep a few newspapers nearby in case anyone wants to wrap breakable things.

Oh, we also have a rule that nobody goes in our house, not even to use the bathroom unless we know them or one of us can be inside to make sure they don't wander around. I'm just paranoid and don't want people scoping out our house to see what we might have to steal.

  • Advertise!  We've had a few & this has been the most important thing.  We put the yard sale on Craigslist.  Put descriptions of what you have (baby stuff, dishes, furniture, etc.) because this brings in more people.

An hour before we ended the sale my DH put on Craiglist that the sale was ending & everything left was FREE.  A bunch of college students came by & took everything.  It helped because we didn't have to make a trip to the Salvation Army to get rid of the leftovers.

    GL!
