Don't you just love it when you have plan and it works?
Back when Lil Miss was 12m, we transitioned her from formula to whole milk. This went really well as she was already used to using a sippy cup. Originally, I had planned to do away with teh bottle completely at that time like the books tell you. But, in the midst of it all, I reconsidered. Lil Miss had so many changes/ new things - walking, dropping a nap, new schedule, milk, etc- that I didn't want to make one more change at the same time. So I decide to keep just two bottles - the one before her nap and the one before bed. I figured why mess with her sleeping routine that is/was working so well? I'm not concerned about toothe decay/ bottle rot becasue she always has eaten upright, has good eating habits, never takes the bottle to bed, finished while awake, and her teeth get brushed 1-2 times daily.
So my plan was with the time/ clock change there would be more daylight, and with her growing walking skills, she would become more and more active. The more active she became, the more tired she would get, and the easier it would be to go to sleep, and the less she would need the bottle to soothe her. I would let the bottle fall away naturally, on its own. If by 18m this hadn't happened, I would then do something.
Well, Lil Miss will be 16m this weekend, and I am happy to report that Phase One of my Plan has been successful!!! The afternoon bottle is obsolete. It has barely been touched this past week and some days I didn't even offer it. This happened on its own. Lil Miss was ready.
What I am most happy about is that I listened to my instinct and not the books/ charts and paid attention to the cues my daughter was giving me and it working out exactly right.
