Parenting after 35

NBR: When would u tell a prospective employer you were pregnant?

I'll try to make this as short as possible (hahaha)

One of my best friends, Technical mngr at my old job moved to Tampa many months ago to become VP of a new company (already existing in Germany for X# of years with apx 15-20 million is sales).  He wants me to head the Sales, Customer Service and Accounting(for now) sort of a Director of Operations deal and yes, the company does have all the perks and then some.  They spare no expense.

I can do it, but here lies the issues:

1- I have not told him I was pregnant, because it was all talk until today.

2-My DH still has about 2-4yrs until he retires with the city job he's had for 21yrs.  The longer he stays the more benefits and retirement he (we) get.

3- My parents live here in Fort Lauderdale (about 4 hrs from Tampa) and they are a great support system.

I'm supposed to do a phone interview with the President tomorrow and he's supposed to ask me to drive up to Tampa so we can "meet"... ruh-roh!  I was not advised of a salary yet, but from the looks of it we're probably talking about low 6 figures + bonuses + 401K ++++.  I basically have thejob "if" I want it.

When would you advise them of your upcoming arrival(s)?  It's not like I can hide my belly anymore.  I know ... I'm bad.

EDIT:  I guess there are two things that must be said, they may not hire me, not now or ever because they need someone now   and   I was kinda sorta hoping to stay home until the twins were at least a few months old.  That would make me ready to work again (anywhere) somewhere around 2nd qrt of 2011.

  • Well, I guess that would depend on when they would want you to start?  Is this a job you said you can probably do from home most of the time?  How much maternity leave do you plan to take after the twins are born?

Not much help....just remember to let me know if you make it over here!!!

    Congrats!!

While it may be stressful thinking about a big change I always say that options are a good thing!!  I can't say whether you should take the job or not based on your husband's benefits - if I were you I would chart out the pros and cons of your positions and include moving costs to Tampa and babysitting costs etc.

As for the pregnancy thing, the troubling part of FLMA is that if you have not worked for the company for one year then they do not have to bring you back after maternity leave.  So even if they didn't have a problem bringing you on board knowing you were pregnant, they don't have to keep a position open for you.

So I would make the maternity leave part of your salary/benefits negotiation. When I was offered a job while I was pregnant the company flat out said they would not guarantee a position for me while I was on maternity leave, so I declined their offer.

  • Carla:  Well, I guess that would depend on when they would want you to start? - That's the problem, i'm not sure but i'll find out tomorrow...but from the looks of it, ASAP, so I can set up all the programs and accounts.

Is this a job you said you can probably do from home most of the time? - in the very beginning yes, defnitely for the first 6-9months but apparently that is not option #1 for the President, he wants me physically there.

How much maternity leave do you plan to take after the twins are born? - Since I only had about 6 wks with N, I was hoping to take more with the twins (knowing that i'll probably need more, too)  maybe 6 months +/-

Not much help....just remember to let me know if you make it over here!!! - I definitely will!  :o)

Thanks Amy: I think I need to sit down with my DH and see where our finances are and where they will be in the future whether or not we decide to move. BTW - they are giving me 5K to move and i'm sure the salary will cover any childcare in case DH will want to find another job...

  • I'd say do the phone interview and get a better feel for some of the other people and take the weekend to talk things over with DH.  It doesn't sound like your 100% on moving.  And as the pp have said, negotiate like mad for what you want and need!  GL
