Baby Names

Baby name spelling question-also posted on 2nd tri board.

So, DH and i have decided to name our little girl, Madelyn Jean.  Jean is my mothers middle name.  I am just not sold on which way to spell Madelyn and also how to spell Maddy as we will probably call her that sometimes.  What do you girls think?

I am not too fond of Madeline spelling-I just dont like the way it would probably be pronounced Mad-a-line....I dont like the line at the end.

We have thought about Madelynn (my middle name is Lynn but dont know if the 2nd N is necessary for her name)

We can also go with Madelyn.

Any other spelling suggestions?

And for Maddy.....do you like it spelled that way, or Maddie, or any other suggestions you have?  Is it better to stick with the Y if her full name has the Y?

Thanks a lot girls!

Re: Baby name spelling question-also posted on 2nd tri board.

  • The proper spelling is Madeleine (pronounce Ma-de-lyn) or Madeline (pronounced Ma-de-line) . I really strongly dislike Madelyn or Madelynn.
  • I like Madelynn because of your middle name being Lynn. I think it has a nice meaning behind it. As far as Maddy goes, I like Maddie.

  • I like Madeline, but Madelyn is fine, too. I don't like Madelynn.

    Yes

  • I prefer the french spelling Madeleine, but if you really must use the "y" then go with Madelyn (one "n")

    This

  • I strongly prefer Madeleine, but I think Madelyn is ok. I think Maddy should be spelled Maddy.
  • Honestly, unless you live in an area with a very strong French cultural influence, it's very likely that no one will pronounce Madeline "Mad-a-line."  Every Madeline I know uses this spelling, and the pronunciation you prefer, including my MIL.
