Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I'm freaking out over this picture...

I've heard about a white flash in a child's eye in a photo possibly meaning a tumor in the retina.  I've even seen posts about it on TB.  Anyway, took this picture of LO a few days ago:

I freaked out as soon as I saw this, called my optometrist friend who referred me to a ped. ophthalmologist to call to get it checked out.  Yesterday, I snapped this pic:

Two red eyes, no white eye (you can't really see the red eyes in this photo size, but they are both red).  Am I being a hypochondriac?  Has anyone taken a photo of their LO with a white flash that turned out to be nothing?  TIA.

  • Post this on the photography site, they should be able to tell you how flashes and if they have had pics turn out like that.

  • Aww, I know that must be scary.  You are doing the right thing by having him checked out.  Did your LO get his eyes checked at birth?  I have heard that usually if there is an issue they catch it then.

I have no experience but I am hoping for the best for you - update us after the doctor's visit.

    PS - LO is precious!

  • That is only possibly true if both eyes are in the same focal plane with the flash. And it looks as though your son turned a bit in the picture, so the flash wouldn't have hit the eyes the same.

  • I had never heard of this before so googled it and found this site interesting:

  • What does it mean if his eyes are red in the photo?

  • If the eyes reflect red, then the retina is processing the flash normally, at least that is how I understand it.  A white flash can mean a tumor is blocking the flash from entering the retina...anyway, I learned about this through this website.

  • As PP said, post this on the photography board.  There are some pro's of there who could answer better.

I did post over there and someone thought I was MUD, but there were some other helpful replies.  Thanks ladies.

  • I'm not expert, but I would think that it's just the angle that the flash hits the baby's eyes that make it white.  But I don't really know.  I've never heard the thing about the tumor.

Yeah I saw that, and was surprised by the response.  I've seen that question posted there before and they are usually very helpful.  althought I see some of them were.

Yeah, this happened to us.  I had never heard of it, but a photographer friend saw a photo of DD on FB and freaked out.  I was 99.9% sure it was a reflection off of a nearby mirror, but we had her pedi check it out and she was fine.
