Antibotics

I went to my primary doctor yesterday and found out I have a double ear infection. He gave me some antibotics and told me they were safe for pregnant women. Well me being me, I called my OB today to double check to make sure they were ok to take and all she said was "If the doctor gave them to you then we have to assume they are ok!"

I don't understand why she couldn't have just taken down the name and gave me a clearer answer. This is my first pregnancy, I havent taken any medicine before yesterday and I don't want to do anything to harm my LO.

Now that being siad I took the first dose yesterday and haven;t felt much movement from LO since then. This could be me being paranoid but I really don't want to take any more of this medicine.

You think it is safe? What would you all do?

Re: Antibotics

  • While I think that maybe she should have listened to what the medicine was, I wouldn't get too worked up. Ear infections are serious, so I would just trust them both and take the meds. I am sure they wouldn't want anything harmful to happen to you or your baby.

  • My primary care dr has access to the same list of "pg safe" drugs as my OB.  When I had to get a Rx for a sinus infection, she explained why she was giving me Amoxicillin (sp?).  I have no reason not to trust her.  Try googling the antibiotic if it makes you feel better.
  • Well, your OB definitely should have been a little more attentive, but I would look up the antibiotic on the internet or ask your pharmacist about it (they tend to know more about drug facts than doctors anyway.)

I had a UTI and had to take an antibiotic.  My OB told me that it's never good to take any medication during pregnancy, but sometimes the benefits outweigh the risks.  She said that the infection could turn into something really serious which would DEFINITELY hurt to the baby.  Most antibiotics are pretty good and only target the infection.  They don't even pass through the placenta.
