It was kind of a big deal when my mom let me get my ears pierced when I was a kid. It was almost like a big part of growing up. So, if I have a girl, I'll probably wait and make it into a big deal like my mom did. I think I was like 9/10, and it felt like such a grown up thing to do!
I have no problem with piercing an infant's ears. But, I want to wait until Baby G makes the decision on her own that she wants them. I just think it will be exciting to take her to have it done someday, & that she will be proud to show them off, & I want to experience that.
My mom had mine done as a baby. If it would have been up to me to do later, I probably wouldn't have done it. I don't know why; I've been with friends to get theirs done. I am not afraid of the pain, but I just don't think I would have ever felt compelled to do it.
I got mine done when I was 5, it was "my decision" and I was so excited to get them done. I can still remember that day! It was a really memorable day with just me & my mom. I went & got them pierced & then my mom took me to get ice cream. I mean, to this day, that's still one of my favorite childhood memories.
I think if you have the piercing done when they are babies it may be easy to keep them clean and help with healing? I don't know, that's just something I've always thought. I don't remember that part of it from when I was 5, I'm sure my mom took care of it, lol.
If we ever have kids, and if I'm lucky enough to have a girl, I don't know what I'll do. I think I'll wait so I can try to share that memory with her when she's older.
As some of you guys know, we pierced mari's ears at the doc last week. My mom had mine done as an infant and I just knew it was something I wanted to do for Mari because I always appreciated never havin to worry about getting them pierced. Also, I worked at Claire's in college and have seen more than enough horror piercings... Especially on 3-5 year old girls who pull away at just the right moment.

Eeek! Talk about frightening!
I had a similar experience to Sarlah's... my sister and I got ours done when I was 10 and she was 9. My mom took just the two of us (left baby bro and toddler sis at home) and we had so much fun picking out our new earrings.
I don't have a strong opinion on when to get it, but after reading Cristina's story I'd either do it when they're babies or wait until they're older like I was!
My mom waited. I pulled away. My piercings are crooked. I wish I would have had mine done as an infant. At least they would be straight! I will probably get K's done around 6 months.
I had to wait until I was 10. My friend's dad is a pediatrician and he did them in his office, just pushed the earrings through, it didn't even hurt.
I was resentful that I had to wait so long when my friends were having them done earlier, and I was EXTRA resentful when my sister got hers done 6 months after me and didn't have to wait until she was 10!
That being said, I'm not a fan of pierced ears on babies, it's just a personal preference. If I have girls I'll probably wait until they are 5 or 6 and make a mommy and me day of it.

This is pretty much what happened with me. I was five, and as my xmas gift, my uncle agreed to do them. He did one and I cried so much that I didn't want the other one done and it is not straight, it goes down because I didn't sit still.
I think I would likely do them for my daughter as an infant.
If we ever have a girl...she will be getting them done as a baby. I had them done as a baby and I always appreciated being able to wear earrings. I remember having friends whose moms didn't let them pierce their ears and I couldn't understand why.
Haaaa, funny you should bring this up! I've had many discussions and arguements over this subject. My sisters and I got them done right after birth, I think is a culture thing. I got Angelica's done at 3 months, the pedi did them. She looks so cute and I love changing her earrings.
Personally I think its ridicules. I plan to wait until Alexa is 5-7 years old and it will be a special day for her if she chooses to want to go get them. I don't think they look cute on babies and why would I want something else to worry about getting infected etc? The women that I know that got it done as infants are also waiting for their children because of getting them done so early they are really low on their ears.
I got mine done as a baby and they aren't crooked or low. I got 2nd holes when I was 18 and I was a huge nervous mess over it. They ended up getting all gross and infected and I just took them out. Huge waste.
I've debated getting Soph's done. I'm either going to do it now or wait until she is about 5 or so.
I got mine pierced when I was 18 but DH already said outta the blue that he wants our baby girl to have hers pierced. Not sure what I think about that. I liked being able to make the decision to have them pierced.
Re: Let's talk ear piercings...
I don't really have an opinion.

I also think is a cultural thing...I got mine done early and everybody that I know in PR does it that way too.
In DH's family they wait until about 10 years and I though that was a bit weird. I got my second piercing on my ears when I was 12 and it hurt.
I think if I ever have a girl I would like to get them done early too.
Def a cultural thing- everyone in dh's family kept asking when I'd pierce Miss P's ears as a baby and I have no plans to until she asks for them.
Once this happens we will discuss and make a day out of it- I'm thinking preteen (11 or 12 is most appropriate) age range.
