Breastfeeding

Older sibling...

I breastfed my dd for 13 months. Until she was about 2, she seemed to remember it even after being completely weaned. She would point to my breasts and say milk. She is now nearly 3 1/2 and ds is now 2 weeks old. The other day she started trying to suck on my breast while I was nursing Owen. I stopped her and said no - it is the baby's food. Now, she asks to have some of "mommy's milk" almost every time I nurse. She has become very needy (to be expected) ever since our new arrival. She has really started acting like a baby in every sense of the word - but wanting to nurse was something I never expected. Anybody else experience this with the older siblings? How did/do you handle the situation?

Re: Older sibling...

  • I would try not to draw attention that it's the new baby's food, it could cause resentment.  I would tell her that she's a big girl and gets big girl milk.  I BF DS1 for 15m and luckily he doesn't seem to remember (or at least has no interest in my bbs).  Try to make her not nursing a positive in her eyes.

  • My DD did this too. She was 2.5 when DS was born and had been weaned for about a year. And more recently she wants me to feed her with a spoon since we've started feeding DS solids, so there's probably more regression in your future.

For the BFing regression, what helped us is that I would sit on the couch to nurse and let DD sit in my lap and "help" hold DS. So she was "feeding him". She was sitting sideways on my lap, with the arm of the couch behind her and her feet on the couch and I just held DS on top of her as if she were my boppy. It wasn't my favorite nursing position, but it worked. And eventually she grew bored with it. But I think what helped is that she felt like she was a part of it and she was getting cuddle time too.

In fact she still asks me to "nurse" her... but what she means is she wants to snuggle in my lap.

Another thing I did that I think helped was that I wore DS in a sling quite a bit around the house, so even if he was nursing I could still help her on the potty, get her a drink, play with her, etc.
