TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Couple of questions (possibly silly)

Ok, so how bad does the saline sonogram hurt? My RE said it is better than the HSG. When they check for endometrial lining thickness and follie size that is a regular u/s right?

Re: Couple of questions (possibly silly)

  • It barely hurts at all. You might get a little AF-like crampy while they're filling your ute with saline, but it's hardly anything.

The worst part about the procedure is just how bizarre it is. I mean, they're filling your ute up with saline. That's not something that normally goes on down there, so it's just weird.

Make sure you bring a pad. What goes in must come out. And come out it does. Your ladygarden will never feel that fresh ever again!

  • Wasn't bad at all, I barely felt it.  You can take some ibuprofen before going, but it isn't really needed.  The worst part for me was the million docs and nurses in the room staring at the "medical marvel with the massive fibroid at such a young age."
DD(9)DD(5.5)DS(3)DS(born 2/1/11) July 2006, lost a baby at 8 weeks, natural miscarriage , May 2009 lost Zoe Eliana at 17 weeks no reason known, possible under developed organs. Lost two more babies in September 2009 at 7 wks 4 days. Had myomectomy surgery to remove a large fibroid in November 2009.
  • Mine didn't hurt at all.  I honestly didn't even feel a thing.  The HSG hurt like an SOB, so I was anticipating the sonogram to hurt as well.  Piece of cake - I promise!

  • It didn't hurt--I was surprised that they already had it in when I looked at the screen. PP is right--it was bizarre.  They turned off the lights in the room and made the chair go waaaay up to where it was almost eye level with the RE.  I'm not sure if they always do that, but it made me feel like I was having surgery or something.  The other thing is my cervix is very far back, so they had to use a bigger speculum, and that hurt.  The saline itself was painless.

They didn't check follies or anything, basically they were just looking for polyps and stuff.  The follie/lining check is with regular u/s.  CD3 & around CD13 for me.

I thought the speculum was the worst part.  I didn't feel the catheter or the liquid going in and had no cramping afterward.  Hope it goes well!

  • Mine was only painful because they did an endometrial biopsy while they were in there.  It is a little weird though, you can watch the whole thing on the screen.

  • Thanks ladies! The saline u/s is anywhere between CD5-10 and my endometrial lining and follie check is at CD14.

  • I haven't had a saline sonogram, but I have had an HSG and it didn't hurt at all for me (I was told I had the best Dr. doing the procedure). I was so nervous about the HSG and it turned out to be completely painless for me. So hopefully the saline sonogram will be the same for you.
  • Really not that bad. I don't want to get one everyday or anything, but it was more than bareable, and I just had some minor cramping afterwards.

    Good luck!

  • I have had a few and they aren't bad at all. The lining and follie check are done with the dildo cam at my RE and is usually very quick.
