I see Jeanette Wolff @ OBGYN Specialists. She is a CNM in an OB practice based out of Lutherville and Owings Mills. They deliver at GBMC.

I'm looking for midwives as well! I've heard many, many great things about Kathy Sloane and Associates (all midwife practice) and I am soon going to talk to Evelyn Muhlhan at Alternative Birth Choices. ?I was initially going to go with an OBGYN at GBMC until I realized that the hospital has the highest C-Section rates in the area (about 42%). ?I thought that was just waaay too high so decided against giving birth there.?

    Good luck on your search!?

The reason there are so many sections there is because they do many of the high risk/multiples at GBMC so the numbers are a bit skewed.

I use Kathleen Slone and associates. I used them for my first and they were wonderful. I am using them for my second one as well. I haven't been able to find another doctor I have been comfortable with.

We are with Evelyn Muhlhan at Alternative Birth Choices in Catonsville.  She does home births and hospital births at Mercy.  So far I've had a consult to determine if I am a candidate for home birth (I am, yay!) as well as my pre-natal part A (they break up the first exam into history/blood work and physical exam).  First physical will be in July.  As a health care practitioner, I really thought Evelyn was wonderfully educated, caring and the right midwife for us!

Special Beginnings in Arnold.  They deliver at the birth center and at Anne Arundel Medical Center.  While it is a bit of a drive, it is well worth it.  We had our baby with them and I couldn't be happier with the care I received and attention during my birth.

Kathy Slone all the way.  All the women are midwives and all share the same birthing philosophy so you will not get one thing for one visit and another at the next.  Plus I have never waited for more that 25 minutes, and that was when I had to go in without an appointment to get my BP checked.  The office is really comfy and kid friendly, they are all very thorough and will stay with you until all your questions are answered.  I cannot say enough wonderful things about the practice!  I guess if you are in AA county a trip into the city might be too far, we just happen to live a few miles away from the office.,

At the risk of starting something, I think the comment about GBMC being skewed is probably not true.  If that were the case then why would'ent Hopkins c-section numbers be as high as well?  Whatever the case, at an average of 30% or higher in the US we are doing something wrong.  Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it!

Good thing you aren't in South America. Wink  As for comparing GBMC to Hopkins, it's really not a fair comparison.  GBMC delivered more than twice the number of babies and yes, they are actually known for their high risk unit, which by default, often times means a planned c-section.  And yes, GBMC's rate is higher than the national average, but so are most of all the other hospitals in Maryland.  For example, AAMC delivers a very large number of babies as well and their rate of c-sections is just below GBMC's, but yet you don't hear of people bashing them. Huh?  As someone who delivered vaginally at GBMC, I have nothing but praise for the treatment I received there.  I chose a dynamic practice that delivers at GBMC and I chose them for the hospital, as well as the many raves about their patient care.  I think your labor and delivery experience is not just based upon the hospital, but rather also with the practice that you choose.  It's important to make sure your wishes and desires about your birth plan are communicated all along during your pregnancy, so that you may get what you want, provided that first and foremost, you and your baby are healthy and safe.

Thanks for the info Autumn!  I should say polite info!  I don't know numbers, had really just assumed that since Hopkins is known for tricky stuff it would be the same for tricky babies.  What you say is so so true - a good practice is what gets you a good experience.  I would say that it's 80% your practice and 20% the hospital and what staff you get that day.

Hilles Whedbee is great!  She is located in Timonium and delivers at Sinai Hospital.  I have been going to her for 14 years for my regular gyn appts and she delivered my son at Sinai in January.  There is another midwife in the practice Sandy Seff.  I really liked both women and would highly recommend them!
