I'm changing my name back to my maiden name (officially). Its already been changed on my driver's license. My attorney (though I requested it) didn't put a clause in my divorce papers regarding my name. He said it wasn't necessary.
I'm planning on going to the Social Security office today to request a new card with my maiden name on it and I'm bringing my driver's license as proof of identity as well as my divorce papers. I did look on the website (ssa.gov) to see about the process for name change and it just said "proof of legal name change".
Has anyone else changed their name BACK from a married name? I didn't even have to show my marriage license when I changed it after I got married but that was a different SS office. I'm just hoping my divorce papers and driver's license will be enough "proof".
Re: Please read and see if you can help...
I have not been through this, but I do know that I had to show my marriage certificate when I changed it after I got married. I would suggest calling down there before you actually have to go because there is nothing more frustrating than going somewhere, waiting, and then not getting what you went there for in the first place.
Good luck!
I'm surprised they let you change the name on your Driver's license before having it changed on your SS card. Usually they require that OR divorce papers b/c you have to have your divorce papers to change it on your SS card. Your attorney should not even be questioning adding the clause to your paperwork. Hopefully he will not cause a fight!
