Labeling digital photos

How do you label your digital photos? I want to be able to search for them from my external hard drive if I am looking for a particular photo, but I am having a hard time with a naming convention.

Currently, I have them filed by month and year. The images themselves are just labeled from the camera.

Maybe I should just trash the ones that I won't ever print, but I have a hard time deleting images of my babies.
