Hawaii Babies

:::Malia & Lisa:::

I was reading your posts in the other thread about Lisa and her CD dilemma and couldn't believe that both of you have only had one blowout.  Seriously??  I've already had more than I'd care to admit (including a small one this morning!) and was wondering if I was doing something wrong?  We've tried Pampers, Huggies, Luvs, Up & Up, Parents' Choice, and the Babies 'R Us brand and pretty much all of them haven't been blowout proof.  Sad  Some work better than others but we haven't found one brand that's blowout-proof.  The only thing I can think of is maybe J's legs aren't chubby enough to create a good seal?  He's not quite 10 pounds yet and although he's put on some weight recently, he's still a little on the skinny side.

Re: :::Malia & Lisa:::

  • Yup, we've had a couple of close calls, but only one real blowout. We have had one pee incident, which was a bit weird and took me a while to figure out - Will managed to get pee all over his top but not his pants. Eventually I realized that someone (coughcoughBencoughcough) hadn't tightened the waist tabs enough (now that they're wriggling like crazy, it's impossible to get them tight enough unless you basically pin down their legs) and since Will's baby business was pointing upward, he'd fountained out of the top of the diaper. Indifferent

    Our boys also have relatively thin legs, although my little chubsters are about 11lbs each, but the blowout that we did get (and the near misses) were all up the back, so finding one that isn't too short has been my priority. We've tried pretty much every brand that's sold in Australia - Huggies work well but are the most expensive here, and the best so far is one we found at Aldi called Mamia (might be an Aussie brand?) - it has a good combination of snug leg fit and a higher rise so it seals off all possible exits lol. I know they have Aldis in some states in the USA - are there any in Hawaii?

  • J's always happens at the leg holes, with the exception of one super blowout that also went up his back. That's what makes me think his legs just aren't fat enough yet? We don't have that store here in Hawaii but for now we're using the Walmart brand diapers. I've also started to keep extra wipes within reach when I have J sitting up in my lap after he finishes eating. His poop schedule is pretty predictable so I guess I should be glad that these blowouts never catch me by surprise?

  • Since they always happen at the same place, I'm guessing you're right and it's just because he has slender legs. Hopefully as he gets chubbier it will be less of a problem...at least for now you know when it will happen! Stick out tongue
  • Oh great. Now I am TOTALLY jinxed! Haha. A few thoughts...

    We tried Seventh Gen and Huggies and they did NOT fit. We liked the fit of Pampers and stuck with them. However, now we are trying Diapers.com and they are fine too. We plan to try Target next.

    Make the diaper is REALLY secure. We basically pull the tabs so far that they are touching in the front, sometimes overlapping. Also, after you secure the tabs, run your finger under the diaper around the legs so that you make sure that the inside liner is spread out over their bum and the edges are secure all around their theighs... You don't want any gaping holes.

    There are two stages of poo and unfortunately you are in the really bad one. Really bad in that it is runny and there is A LOT of it. I'd say that period runs from about 1-6 months. During this time, BFed babies sometimes will go several days without a BM. So when they have one, it's HUGE and is usually a blowout.

    During this time, Alexa used to go a LONG time, so long that she started to get really fussy and she wouldn't eat. So her pediatrician told us to "help" her go (use a thermometer, you get the idea) every other day. This was gross, but the benefit was that I could control when the lava flow happened. I also knew that if she'd gone a day without going, I'd be on alert the following day for it. And I'd check and change her all the time.

    When we introduced solids at 6 mo, her poo changed. Now it's more like cookies and brownies. Haha. Soft but packed. Not runny at all. I think the correct term is "turds." These things aren't runny and so no more blowouts.

    Finally, I think she just has a fat butt. Haha. Kidding! Hope you get a break from the blowouts... No fun!

    LMAO now when they get this kind of poo, this is the description I'm going to think of.  Big Smile
